The Bruising of Qilwa
The Bruising of Qilwa | Naseem Jamnia
4 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
In this intricate fantasy novella, a refugee practitioner of blood magic finds a strange disease that causes political rifts in their new homeland. Persian-American author Naseem Jamnia is a vital new voice who has crafted a gripping narrative layered with themes of persecution, healing, and family. The Bruising of Qilwa is the newest arrival in the era of new fantasy classics such as the Broken Earth Trilogy (The Fifth Season), The Four Profound Weaves, and Who Fears Death. Firuz-e Jafari is one of the fortunate ones who have emigrated to the Democratic Free State of Qilwa. Firuz has escaped the slaughter of other traditional Sassanid blood-magic practitioners. They have a good job at a free healing clinic in Qilwa; a kindly new employer, Kofi; and a gifted new student, Afsoneh, a troubled orphan refugee. But Firuz and Kofi have discovered a terrible new disease which leaves mysterious bruises on its victims. The illness is spreading quickly through Qilwa, and there are dangerous accusations of ineptly-performed blood magic. In order to survive, Firuz must break a deadly cycle of prejudice while finding a fresh start for their both their blood and found family.

Medical fantasy. Very real. Very visual. Amazing flawed characters.

Refugee and blood magic user Firuz convinces a small clinic to take them on as an assistant during a pandemic, and they find themself in the midst of an unexpected underlying crisis. I really enjoyed this read, which I picked up because of #RainbowCrateBookBox. I liked the characters, and always enjoy finding queer-normative settings. The ending got intense but it was really good. Also loved the giant mushrooms. #LGBTQ #Magic

Clare-Dragonfly Queer normative world and giant mushrooms? You have my attention 😁🍄 1y
Kenyazero @Clare-Dragonfly I really wish there was more description of the setting, because we only get a glimpse and there are giant mushrooms and I love it! 1y

I'll eventually stop being lazy and actually update this graphic properly, but for now I'll use pic collage to show off my additional two reads for #LGBTQBookBingo!

I've been meaning to read this novella ever since I got the arc because I know the author (they edited a short story of mine) and it did not dissapoint! A refugee finds work as a healer in their new home but must hide their affinity for blood magic as a plague sweeps the city and fingers begin pointing at the dangerous and often misunderstood work of blood mages. Great sibling relationships and the complicated interplay of marginalization.
