My Mother, Munchausen's and Me
My Mother, Munchausen's and Me: A true story of betrayal and a shocking family secret | Helen Naylor
3 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
There was a time when I loved my mother. Its shocking to imply that I stopped loving my mum because mothers always love their children and always do their best for them. Mothers are supposed to be good. But my mother wasnt good. Ten years ago, Helen Naylor discovered her mother, Elinor, had been faking debilitating illnesses for thirty years. After Elinors self-induced death, Helen found her diaries, which Elinor wrote daily for over fifty years. The diaries reveal not only the inner workings of Elinors twisted mind and self-delusion, but also shocking revelations about Helens childhood. Everything Helen knew about herself and her upbringing was founded on a lie. The unexplained accidents and days spent entirely on her own as a little girl, imagining herself climbing into the loft and disappearing into a different world, tell a story of neglect. As a teenager, her mothers advice to Helen on her body and mental health speaks of dangerous manipulation. With Elinors behaviour becoming increasingly destructive, and Helen now herself a mother, she was left with a stark choice: to collude with Elinors lies or be accused of abandoning her. My Mother, Munchausens and Me is a heart-breaking, honest and brave account of a daughter unravelling the truth about her mother and herself. Its a story of a stolen childhood, mental illness, and the redemptive power of breaking a complex and toxic bond.

This was a really interesting though at times hard read. It deals with a very sensitive subject and is one sided account but it reads very honestly. It was hard at times not to wonder how did no one step in or how could so many believe the lies but of course this happens more than we realise. Its a fairly dark story though at times it lacks a little depth. #Netgalley 4* 16pts for #WinterGames2021 #MistletoeManiacs @Clwojick

This memoir focuses on the author‘s complicated & heartbreaking relationship with her mother- a woman who though was never diagnosed with Munchausen‘s but clearly seems like a textbook example of it. Helen‘s narcissistically hypochondriac mother may not be as classically abusive as other mothers, but the wounds she creates in her daughter are quite real. Written with emotion & using her mother‘s journals as well, this makes for a compelling read!

KatieDid927 Narcissistic abuse is real and it‘s being studied and talked about more. 2y
TorieStorieS @KatieDid927 I totally agree- especially after reading this! It should definitely be discussed more, too, to raise awareness! 2y
Crazeedi This sounds like a hard book to read, might break my heart 2y

I requested this book on NetGalley because I'd like to know more about Munchausen's and narcissistic personality disorder. The book is the author's cathartic memoir of pain and healing. I understand her fear of repeating her mother's behaviors with her own child. .

Recommended for children of narcissistic parents.
