Fire in My Eyes: An American Warrior's Journey from Being Blinded on the Battlefield to Gold Medal Victory
Fire in My Eyes: An American Warrior's Journey from Being Blinded on the Battlefield to Gold Medal Victory | Brad Snyder, Tom Sileo
5 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
"I am not going to let my blindness build a brick wall around me. I'd give my eyes one hundred times again to have the chance to do what I have done, and what I can still do." Brad Snyder speaking with First Lady Michelle Obama On the night Osama bin Laden was killed, US Navy Lieutenant Brad Snyder was serving in Afghanistan as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal officer with SEAL Team Ten. When he learned of SEAL Team Six's heroics across the Pakistani border, Brad was thankful. Still, he knew that his dangerous combat deployment would continue. Less than five months later, Brad was engulfed by darkness after a massive blast caused by an enemy improvised explosive device. Suddenly Brad was blind, with vivid dreams serving as painful nightly reminders of his sacrifice. Exactly one year after losing his sight, Brad heard thousands cheer as he stood on a podium in London. Incredibly, Brad had just won a gold medal in swimming at the 2012 Paralympic Games. "Fire in My Eyes" is the astonishing true story of a wounded veteran who refused to give up. Lieutenant Brad Snyder did not let blindness build a wall around him through tenacity and courage, he tore it down."

Sorry I don't know how to give a picture of an ebook.
This very inspiring story is told by a man who had his sight taken from him in war and made a new life for himself with a lot of help and a guide dog.

People go read this book! I'm not much for military books, but I love a good medical / transformative memoir so I requested it from NetGalley. I read about 20% in, and found that I just couldn't put it down. Snyder is arguably stronger and tougher than most of us will ever have to be. But he's also by turns humble, compassionate, and funny. Dolly I'm also not into military books but I'll follow you on this one and put it on my TBR. 8y

I wasn't expecting to like this memoir so much. The writing is amateurish sometimes, but not often. This is the MC older brother debating about whether is younger sister should see his injuries from an IED. Really sweet.

Starting this one today from my NetGalley shelf. So far the writing's a bit simplistic but the story is interesting.

LiteraryinLawrence Sounds like a good thing to read while watching the Olympic swimming events? 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LiteraryinLititz So far, it's about his Navy service. More about Paralympics soon! 8y
