A community practices some civil disobedience when a young child thinks Whites Only means to take off her shoes. Hah!! Loved it.

White Socks Only by Evelyn Coleman and illustrated by Tyrone Geter is a HF book set in the segregated South about an African-American girl who thinks that because she is wearing white socks, she can drink from a fountain that is labeled, “Whites Only”.

This book should be RA to students. There are so many questions the teacher could discuss with their students before, during, and after reading this book.

Nkaufmann The UDL principle 3.1 regarding activating or supplying background knowledge and the EL principle 14 regarding simplifying your speech by making it slower and redundant. Teachers should supply background knowledge about what it was like in the segregated south before reading this story to aid in the students‘ comprehension.

#SongsOfSummer Day 26: Fats‘ review: “The story begins with a grandmother and her grandchild talking on the porch one hot summer‘s day in Mississippi. #ThisSummer. The little girl asked if she can walk into town by herself. Her grandmother turned and spit in her can, rocked two times, closed her eyes, then looked at the little girl. The question seemed to have been asked a million times, since the act seemed ritualistic.” https://wp.me/pDlzr-Wy

Simplistic portrayal of a complex issue.
