This fearless debut novel explores racism, injustice, and self-expression through the story of a promising Black football star in Louisiana. The system is rigged. For guys like Russell Boudreaux, football is the only way out of their small town. As the teams varsity tight end, Rus has a singular goal: to get a scholarship and play on the national stage. But when his best friend is unfairly arrested and kicked off the team, Rus faces an impossible choice: speak up or live in fear. Please rise for the national anthem. Desperate for change, Rus kneels during the national anthem. In one instant, he falls from local stardom and becomes a target for hatred. But hes not alone. With the help of his best friend and an unlikely ally, Rus will fight for his dreams, and for justice.

The storyline felt very real. It depicted the racism and injustice black people face every day in a very nuanced way. It did a fantastic job highlighting the internal struggle of deciding whether or not to speak out. Taking a stand, or in this case, kneeling, has both positive and negative consequences, and this book dove right into the complexity of it all.

I've cried so much while listening to this book. I feel like this should be a required read for Sophomores and up.

I'm only 20 percent into this book. But so far it's so relatable to my life.

1. Seeing my sons play their first football game and win. Both of them play for varsity. I'm so scared of my youngest being on varsity, but he's showing me he can do it.
2. In my opinion, the 1st of September begins Fall/Autumn for me.

Reign_1982 @MoonWitch94 you're welcome. Thank you, I'm so scared about them playing football. Unfortunately, they both were diagnosed today with Covid. So they won't be at their rival game tomorrow. 13mo

Reign_1982 @MoonWitch94 it's odd in December I was the only one in the house with it. We go to their dads for the weekend. Now my children and their dad has covid. But a lot of our football players have it. 😔🤷🏾‍♀️ 13mo
MoonWitch94 @Reign_1982 Maybe it‘s the Delta strain; it‘s supposedly more transmitted & kids/young adults get it more often 🤷🏻‍♀️ Hoping they do miss too many games & get well soon with no long term effects 💗 13mo
