The Nature of Oaks
The Nature of Oaks: The Rich Ecology of Our Most Essential Native Trees | Douglas W. Tallamy
4 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
A timely and much needed call to plant, protect, and delight in these diverse, life-giving giants. David George Haskell, author of The Forest Unseen and The Songs of Trees With Bringing Nature Home, Doug Tallamy changed the conversation about gardening in America. His second book, the New York Times bestseller Natures Best Hope, urged homeowners to take conservation into their own hands. Now, he is turning his advocacy to one of the most important species of the plant kingdomthe mighty oak tree. Oaks sustain a complex and fascinating web of wildlife. The Nature of Oaks reveals what is going on in oak trees month by month, highlighting the seasonal cycles of life, death, and renewal. From woodpeckers who collect and store hundreds of acorns for sustenance to the beauty of jewel caterpillars, Tallamy illuminates and celebrates the wonders that occur right in our own backyards. He also shares practical advice about how to plant and care for an oak, along with information about the best oak species for your area. The Nature of Oaks will inspire you to treasure these trees and to act to nurture and protect them.

A wonderful month by month look at how the oak tree sustains wildlife and how important it is in nature. I‘ll definitely listen to this one again as it‘s so fascinating

My favorite part of our backyard is the three old white oak trees that live there. It was fun to read a book about them and the animals they host throughout the year.

BarbaraBB That is very interesting 11mo

My newest tattoo. This was taken at the time I got it, that‘s why it‘s so red.

A brief #audiobook, part of the #hoopla bonus borrows in the month of August. Essentially, your library doesn‘t have to pay for your borrow and it doesn‘t count against your monthly total checkouts! Anyway, since listening to this informative, short (4 hrs) title, I have been obsessed with oaks. I‘ve searched our town and property for these living giants. While I don‘t have any currently, I‘ll most definitely be planting some this fall. 🌳 🍁

jdiehr Might have to check this one out. I grew up in Thousand Oaks, CA 🙂 3y
TiredLibrarian @Chelsea.Poole We have plenty where I live. They're beautiful, majestic trees, but homeowners with them complain about the acorns and leaf cleanup, so several have been cut down. 🌳🍃🍂😥 3y
