I Alone Can Fix It
I Alone Can Fix It: Donald J. Trump's Catastrophic Final Year | Philip Rucker, Carol D. Leonnig
8 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
The definitive behind-the-scenes story of Trump's final year in office, by Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig, the Pulitzer Prize winning reporters and authors of the #1 New York Times bestseller, A Very Stable Genius The true story of what took place in Donald Trump's White House during a disastrous 2020 has never before been told in full. What was really going on around the president, as the government failed to contain the coronavirus and over half a million Americans perished? Who was influencing Trump after he refused to concede an election he had clearly lost and spread lies about election fraud? To answer these questions, Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig reveal a dysfunctional and bumbling presidency's inner workings in unprecedented, stunning detail. Focused on Trump and the key players around him-the doctors, generals, senior advisers, and Trump family members- Rucker and Leonnig provide a forensic account of the most devastating year in a presidency like no other. Their sources were in the room as time and time again Trump put his personal gain ahead of the good of the country. These witnesses to history tell the story of him longing to deploy the military to the streets of American cities to crush the protest movement in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, all to bolster his image of strength ahead of the election. These sources saw firsthand his refusal to take the threat of the coronavirus seriously-even to the point of allowing himself and those around him to be infected. This is a story of a nation sabotaged-economically, medically, and politically-by its own leader, culminating with a groundbreaking, minute-by-minute account of exactly what went on in the Capitol building on January 6, as Trump's supporters so easily breached the most sacred halls of American democracy, and how the president reacted. With unparalleled access, Rucker and Leonnig explain and expose exactly who enabled-and who foiled-Trump as he sought desperately to cling to power.

It took 2 months to finish the #audiobook of I Alone Can Fix It, but mostly because I couldn‘t listen to it with the kids in the car this summer because of the language. I remain convinced that Mark Milley saved our collective asses & will preorder any book he deigns to author. When Women Were Dragons was, regrettably, only so-so (spoilers in comments).

mrsmarch I remain confused about the significance of the knots & the MC‘s mother‘s somehow familial knot-magic & what that has to do, or doesn‘t, with the dragoning. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 8mo
BennettBookworm I totally agree- it was esp a bummer because her other book, The Girl Who Drank the Moon, is one of my favorites. 8mo
mrsmarch @BennettBookworm I‘ve never read this author before, so the only expectations I had going in were that the reviews loved it, the premise sounds meaty & interesting, & then I saw it was dedicated to Christine Blasey Ford! It could have been 1/3 longer & pulled some points together more tightly & I‘d have been happier. 8mo

I‘ve read a lot of books about Trump and the 2016 & 2020 elections, so nothing in her surprised me. Still, it is well written and offers clarity that some other books don‘t.

What you'd expect. Fly on the wall narrative of a dysfunctional administration. But still intriguing & unintentionally (ostensibly) comedic.

I don't read much horror fiction, I tend to stick to true life horror stories. Trump's final year in office, and the other three to be honest, was a s**tshow of epic proportions. The staggering level of incompetence, raw lust for power, hubris and greed is mindblowing. Fortunately there were a few adults in the administration that kept things from being worse than they were. 4 💥💥💥💥

Lreads True life horror, indeed. 3y
KathyWheeler It‘s hard to imagine that there were actual sane adults in that administration. I can‘t read anything about him, but my husband will, so I‘m going to suggest this book to him. 3y
AmyG Horror, indeed. I can‘t even bear to read anything about him. Maybe if he is ever held accountable I will. 3y
Ruthiella 😱😱😱 Thanks for taking one for the team! 3y

Well, that ended, thank God. The administration, not the book. I could have read more of the book.

Chrissyreadit It feels like we still have tremors and aftershocks unfortunately. 3y
Susanita @Chrissyreadit Tremors and aftershock s describe the situation well. 3y

BookishMarginalia @vivastory Clear and present danger. I keep thinking of Germany in the 1930‘s. The danger is not over. 3y
