The Making of Donald Trump
The Making of Donald Trump | David Cay Johnston
The culmination of nearly 30 years of reporting on Donald Trump, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, David Cay Johnston, takes a revealingly close look at the mogul's rise to power and prominence. Covering the long arc of Trumps career, Johnston tells the full story of how a boy from a quiet section of Queens, NY would become an entirely new, and complex, breed of public figure. Trump is a man of great media savvy, entrepreneurial spirit, and political clout. Yet his career has been plagued by legal troubles and mounting controversy. From the origins of his familys real estate fortune, to his own too-big-to-fail business empire; from his education and early career, to his whirlwind presidential bid, The Making of Donald Trump provides the fullest picture yet of Trumps extraordinary ascendency. Love him or hate him, Trumps massive influence is undeniable, and figures as diverse as Woody Guthrie (who wrote a scathing song about Trumps father) and Red Scare prosecutor Roy Cohn, mob bosses and high rollers, as well as the average American voter, have all been pulled into his orbit. Drawing on decades of interviews, financial records, court documents, and public statements, David Cay Johnston, who has covered Trump more closely than any other journalist working today, gives us the most in-depth look yet at the man who would be president. Praise for the author's previous books: "Everyone who wants to understand what's happening with the tax system should read Perfectly Legal." --Paul Krugman, The New York Times "Eye-opening." -- John Landry, Harvard Business Review "This book is vital, an infuriating call to action." -- Jim Hightower, author of Thieves in High Places "Truly shocking." -- James K. Galbraith, The New York Times Book Review "Superb." -- Steve Weinberg, Cleveland Plain Dealer From the Hardcover edition.

So, I'm not really reading but thought I'd take this not reading/reviewing time to highlight political books I read in 2016 that are way better than Fire and Fury in case you were looking for something to read while on library hold. I read The Making of Donald Trump and immediately called my sister to say "He is even worse than you think he is!" Which I guess was the reaction of many as the author's new book basically takes that as its title.

Hard to read, but necessary to understand the kind of man we have running our country.

If you have somehow gotten this far in life without knowing what a schmeckle DT is, then this brief overview should fill in some gaps, but if you're looking for something with depth and breadth, this may not be quite enough. Not up to the author's usual standard of clarity, but *lots* of citations for further reading, plus an index.

I've been reading a bunch of political books because of the election. This is a great overview of Trump's real estate dealings, especially in Atlantic City. The author comes across a little self-important, but the book is extremely well-researched, thorough, and easy to read. Everyone who can vote in this election should read this book.

Political expression gets creative, when one is in a bookstore...

(p.s. We're actually admirers of this brutal, in-depth examination of Donald Trump and his unsuitable ess for President, from Pulitzer-winning investigative journalist David Cay Johnston, who spent 3 decades studying the subject...)

Hazel0303 Omg I worked at B&N during the 2008 election. People would always flip over the Hillary or Obama books. I took great pleasure in following someone turning them over and putting them back face up. 'Merica 8y

I knew my distaste for Donald Trump ran deep. Now I know why. This book would be scary and eye-opening if it was about decades of the shady dealings of a well-known real estate investor. The fact that it's about a major American political party's presidential nominee is terrifying - to me, anyway. Fans of Trump are likely never to pick this one up. The rest of us can turn page after cringe-worthy page.

"...Weichselbaum's girlfriend bought two adjoining 39th story Trump Tower apartments, numbered 49A and 49B, because Trump skipped ten floors of numbers to inflate the apparent height of his signature building, erected a few years earlier."

That math seems legit.

AmyG Excellent book. And now that Trump is the GOP nominee....a horror story. 8y
TheJOMOreader @AmyG Right?! This is terrifying. I'm recommending it to my friends who like true crime, because I feel the same way listening to this book as I do with some crazy cases that I get immersed in. 8y

TheJOMOreader @GinaAnderson You MUST listen to this Audiobook. Listening to the author/narrator directly quoting The Donald is the most hilarious and cringeworthy thing I've ever heard. 8y

Today's theme for the #augustphotochallenge is #politicsandbooks! I'm not really sure if I have any books based on politics . I'll maybe have to dig for an odd one. Hopefully my fellow Spinecrackers are more interested in to this topic.

Does exactly what it says and does not hold back. A damning look at Trump intended to educate voters. The problem with this mission statement is that those who will read this will almost certainly already distrust Trump but this explored lots of Trump's life. I think I would have liked it to be slightly longer but it was a good and informative read.

A fast yet deep book about the life of Donald Trump.

The book describes the fraud of Trump, his organization, how he shorts money, how he licenses his name for projects that he got no relation to.

The book describes the power and the awe associated with Trump; how it's a lucrative brand name, yet it's built on a house of cards.

I hope many people would read this book and see how horrible the future would be if this person gets elected.
