A bleak account of the homelessness and rootlessness of millennials set in the recent political turmoils of England. Some powerful writing - I liked the account of reading the grenfell inquiry report by an Uber driver particularly. And whilst I understand the worthlessness she feels there was something unsympathetic about the protagonist which made this an uneasy read

When did it become ridiculous to think that a stable economy and a fair housing market were reasonable expectations? I really think growing up in the middle of a financial crash traumatised a lot of my generation and skewed our perception of what we‘re allowed to ask for

Set just pre-Brexit, this pessimistic millennial novel is sharp and well observed but didn‘t quite land for me.
It opens with an epigraph from Woolf‘s ‘Room of one‘s own‘. The unnamed protagonist doesn‘t have grand ambitions, she just wants to be able to afford her own place. A rented room, a sofa in a friends flat, and back at her parents, are where she finds herself, as she struggles to find her place in the world, in the workplace, in society.

Who are you then? (I scrolled). You are brown and bourgeois,and the internet does not believe you exist. You believe in equal opportunity and the welfare state. You believe in homeownership and a competitive CV. Riot or March, all it comes down to is neoliberal shame.

This cover! Colors are stunning- Drew me right to the display shelf. I had never heard a thing about this book! It does sound intriguing - not sure if I just paid for cover art!
