It's said that sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, and an eccentric billionaire has set out to prove it by building an island retreat that brings the fantastic to life. In an action-packed novel for fans of Ready Player One, Carrie Vaughn asks what happens when a bunch of tech geeks and fantasy nerds don't realize the game they are now playing is for real?

A damaged but resilient uber-nerd professor of popular culture is sent to assist a colorful team of mercenaries with the retaking of a hijacked pleasure resort, a sort of Westworld for Dungeons and Dragons. There's so much geeky fanservice that I wonder whether the book can reach beyond its nerdy niche, but here's also high-tech hijinks galore, just enough sex, and some surprising twists at the end to satisfy the more normcore reader.

I really, really wanted to love this book but my feelings are lukewarm as best.
Super rich tech dude builds an immersive fantasy theme park (think LARPing on steroids) but his employees on the island go rogue. Classic lit professor Addie Cox is sent in with private contractors to take it back. Considering how smart and into D&D she is, Addie makes some brainless choices at the worst possible times. Freaking unicorns.

I loved this book-the writing is ok, super cool story & the world building was great!
An island in the style of Jurassic Park, but for fantasy lovers, has been taken over in what the billionaire owner calls a coup. Can a team of highly trained mercenaries and a PhD in comparative literature survive the fantastic creatures, deadly puzzles, & totally immersed workers to open the island again?
4/5 stars, I was this island to be real!

#EarlGrey does@not get daylight savings and so woke me up at 4:30 for a hug. Fortunately he went right back to sleep after a quick cuddle. I‘m still up, but having loads of fun with this Jurassic Park meets nerd fandoms read.

Lindy I‘m intrigued. I enjoyed the only book by Vaughn that I‘ve read so far: 2y
BookishTrish @lindy I really enjoyed the Kitty Norville books (though I have only read three). She‘s a good storyteller. 2y
Lindy @BookishTrish Good to know about Kitty Norville, since there are so many 😊 2y

The last few days here in the PNW have been awful - just brutally hot with temperatures of 115F/45C both yesterday & today. I needed something pulpy & not too challenging to read & this was perfect. I really enjoy Vaughn‘s writing & this is obviously her love letter to fantasy fandoms 🦄🧝‍♀️🏰🐲. A lot of fun 🤩

CW: the main character has PTSD from gun violence, & while it is handled well (& realistically), it is a major part of the plot.
