Report From #24
Report From #24: The Thrilling Tale of Norways Most Decorated World War II Hero | Gunnar Sonsteby
1 post
When Hitler's invasion shattered Norway's peace of one hundred years, Gunnar Sonsteby, a timid youth, was destined to become the legendary "No. 24," whose exploits earned the highest honors Norway could bestow when it was restored after World War II. REPORT FROM #24 is Sonsteby's own account of his underground activities during the Nazi occupation. He was a master saboteur and raider, leader of the Oslo Gang and chief of operations in the Norwegian Resistance Movement. It is a dazzling tale of one man's defiant answer to tyranny and the story of valiant men and women whose ranks extended from a bakery in Oslo to a peasant's hut on the Swedish border.

I went downtown yesterday and snapped a few pictures.

The first is this statue. Standing below the royal caste, between the national theatre and the first university.

This is Gunnar Sønsteby. He fought against the Nazis in WWII and had several code names like “nr. 24” and “Kjakan”. He is Norway‘s highest decorated citizen.

The location of his statue is where he stood April 9 1940 when the Nazis invaded the country and walked down Karl Johan.

AnneCecilie This was the place and moment, he decided to fight against the Nazis. #foodandlit #Norway @Texreader @Butterfinger 4y
