Living Up The Street
Living Up The Street | Gary Soto
3 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
In a prose that is so beautiful it is poetry, we see the world of growing up and going somewhere through the dust and heat of Fresno's industrial side and beyond: It is a boy's coming of age in the barrio, parochial school, attending church, public summer school, and trying to fall out of love so he can join in a Little League baseball team. His is a clarity that rings constantly through the warmth and wry reality of these sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic, always human remembrances.

I enjoy Soto‘s books! I can relate to his settings as he was born the same year as me! In this childhood/adolescent memoir, he evokes that precious decade from 1957 to 1967 in a bustling community devoid of internet and virtual existence. The neighborhood was our world, getting into harmless mischief and scaring the wits out of our moms…

It's back to school next Wed, & this is how I reread--by dividing it over several days. I borderline resent the time rereading these takes away from my TBR & in progress books.
