A road trip beneath clear blue skies and a blazing sun: a reclusive artist is forced to abandon his home and follow two young sisters across a post-pandemic Europe in search of a safe place. Is this the end of the world?Meanwhile two computer scientists have been educating their baby in a remote location. Their baby is called Talos, and he is an advanced AI program. Every week they feed him data, starting from the beginning of written history, era by era, and ask him to predict what will happen next to the human race. At the same time they're involved in a increasingly fraught philosophical debate about why human life is sacred and why the purpose for which he was built - to predict threats to human life to help us avoid them - is a worthwhile and ethical pursuit. These two strands come together in a way that is always suspenseful, surprising and intellectually provocative: this is an extraordinarily prescient and vital work of fiction - an apocalyptic road novel to frighten and thrill.

A really interesting apocalyptic novel exploring themes of pandemics, environmental disaster, radiation and artificial intelligence, and somehow making it work! Bleak, but with touches of humour throughout, I enjoyed this!

This was really good - I'm glad I picked it up at random knowing nothing about it. It's half a pandemic story (and follows three people trying to cross Europe). The other half involves two scientists trying to teach an AI in the hope that it will solve humanity's problems. That turns into a philosophical and ecological debate, and it's so interesting. Recommend.

LeeRHarry Well that‘s that stacked! 😊 2y

Also started this one today - another #bookshopcrawl purchase - it's really good so far - it's about an AI and I'm loving the way it is developing.

Caroline2 Oh I love books about AI 😯 2y
Oryx @Caroline2 how are you with reading about pandemics? If that's not too off putting, I can send it to you? I really liked it. But I know pandemic reading is not everyone's jam at the moment... 2y
Caroline2 Oh thank you! 😃 That would be fab. I‘ve not read any pandemic books since the pandemic… 🤔 but I think it‘ll be ok. 👍 2y
Oryx @Caroline2 I'll post it soon. The AI bit is also set in the Arctic btw, so another reason you might like it ❄️ (although it's only peripheral). 2y
