The Pear Field
The Pear Field | Nana Ekvtimishvili
4 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Lela knows two things: her history teacher must die and she must start a new life beyond the pear field. On the outskirts of Tbilisi, in a newly independent Georgia, is the Residential School for Intellectually Disabled Children or, as the locals call it, the School for Idiots. Abandoned by their parents, the pupils here receive lessons in violence and neglect. At eighteen, Lela is old enough to leave, but with nowhere to go she stays and plans, both for her own escape and for the future she hopes to give Irakli, a young boy at the school. When a couple from the USA decide they want to adopt a child, Lela is determined to do everything she can to help Irakli make the most of this chance.

Pickpick

Lela is 18 yo girl living in the School for Intellectually Disabled Children for almost her whole life. The story is viewed from Lela‘s perspective and she slowly reveals through her everyday life all the misery, abuse and neglecting. The story also touches some broader topics: fears/prejudices in society, and situation in post-Soviet Georgia, but just as the frame for Lela‘s life. Story interesting, some scenes are heartbreaking, some scenes 👇

Simona ... are just over the top, but what I really liked is Lela‘s calm, reasonable, almost detached narrative voice. Good, but not exceptional book. #InternationalBookerPrize2021 3y
BarbaraBB You are getting fast through the longlist. No favorites yet I guess? 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB Because majority of the books are in the length of novella. I have the favourite book ... but I haven‘t written a review, yet😘 3y

1/13 #internationalbookerprize2021

I did like this but tbh I liked it less than I was maybe expecting. I loved reading a Georgian book for the first time, it‘s always so exciting to open up a whole new country to read from, but the actual plot and characters of the book left me a little cold. For a book that went to such dark places I guess I was hoping for a more rewarding experience after going there.

Woooo it‘s #bookerinternational2021 time! I did abysmally at getting through the list last year and want to try harder this year though I probably won‘t manage (or be able to afford) all of them. I‘ve bought the tagged book to start with and am very excited to see something translated from Georgian on the list! Anyone else trying to tackle the long list?

Leftcoastzen I‘m reading one now from the library, but reading the long list with other reading commitments is probably not possible 3y
BookwormM I have 3 on order from the library 3y
rockpools The tagged one sounds good! So many I want to read from this list - I‘ve read Minor Detail, and have 2 on order from the library. Hoping someone does some serious special offers for some of the others tho 😬 3y

Emilymdxn @rockpools you‘re so right! I can‘t access a library atm as I moved house in the middle of lockdown and couldn‘t register, I‘d forgotten how expensive all the books on the long list always are 3y
rockpools @Emilymdxn I hadn‘t realised that pricey was the norm! Can you not join the library online? Quite a few are doing temporary membership where you don‘t have to go in & can use ebooks/audiobooks straight away (but very aware that London libraries seem to operate differently to others, so that might not work if that‘s where you are) 3y
Simona 🙋‍♀️of course 😘 I‘m currently reading 3y
mhillis I plan to read the ones I can borrow! Starting with 3y
