Ticking Clock
Ticking Clock: Behind the Scenes at 60 Minutes | Ira Rosen
6 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Two-time Peabody Award-winning writer and producer Ira Rosen reveals the intimate, untold stories of his decades at Americas most iconic news show. Its a 60 Minutes story on 60 Minutes itself. When producer Ira Rosen walked into the 60 Minutes offices in June 1980, he knew he was about to enter television history. His career catapulted him to the heights of TV journalism, breaking some of the most important stories in TV news. But behind the scenes was a war room of clashing producers, anchors, and the most formidable 60 Minutes figure: legendary correspondent Mike Wallace. Based on decades of access and experience, Ira Rosen takes readers behind closed doors to offer an incisive look at the show that invented TV investigative journalism. With surprising humor, charm, and an eye for colorful detail, Rosen delivers an authoritative account of the unforgettable personalities that battled for prestige, credit, and the desire to scoop everyone else in the game. As Mike Wallaces top producer, Rosen reveals the interview secrets that made Wallaces work legendary, and the flaring temper that made him infamous. Later, as senior producer of ABC News Primetime Live and 20/20, Rosen exposes the competitive environment among famous colleagues like Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters, and the power plays between correspondents Chris Wallace, Anderson Cooper, and Chris Cuomo. A master class in how TV news is made, Rosen shows readers how 60 Minutes puts together a story when sources are explosive, unreliable, and even dangerous. From unearthing shocking revelations from inside the Trump White House, to an outrageous proposition from Ghislaine Maxwell, to interviewing gangsters Joe Bonanno and John Gotti Jr., Ira Rosen was behind the scenes of 60 Minutes' most sensational stories. Highly entertaining, dishy, and unforgettable, Ticking Clock is a never-before-told account of the most successful news show in American history.

If you‘re in the mood for some arrogant self aggrandizing, this is the book for you! In addition to ending every story with “I was right and everyone else was wrong”, he takes no responsibility for any of his own actions or inactions. After noting how horrible conditions were for women at the beginning of the book, he ends with this flippant “too bad” attitude. The above quote sums it up nicely. He saw and did nothing because he was so important?

JoeMo I‘ve been intrigued by this since it came out, but didn‘t like the arrogant vibe the author gave off in interviews…always complaining about egos of the talent and especially what a piece of 💩folks like Wallace legitimately were, but failing to acknowledge his own seemingly giant ego and worse, his lack of effort to prevent the sexism and other toxic behaviors that thrived behind the scenes. Thanks to you, I‘ll definitely take a pass on this one! 3y
OutAndAbout @JoeMo I hate taking books off people‘s TBRs since I know most books are just personal taste. But sounds like his interview was accurately reflective of his book. Glad to save you the time. 3y

I‘m enjoying this but I‘m right at half way and really don‘t want to read one more “I had this awesome idea that no one would let me do so I whined to whomever would listen to me They finally let me do it and we won this amazing award because of it.” Really hoping for some emotional intelligence to emerge at some point. Surely it can‘t all be this arrogant.
