Audio. This was essentially my childhood and tween years...but we had basements (not for bomb protection), not fallout shelters. We hid under our desks for bomb drills, lived through Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis, assassinations of 2 Kennedys and MLK, and I watched the famous 1969 moon landing on the B & W tv. The audio had tv/radio news blurbs etc-really took me back. #bookspinbingo

COUNTDOWN is my favorite YA book that helps teens understand that era. The book mixes fiction along with non-fictional aspects of everyday life during the time period. It also includes beautiful, historical pictures for teens to see who the "characters" in the book are. I found myself calling/texting my mom (born in 1950) asking about things from her generation as I read through the book. #INTEGRATEYOURSHELF @ChasingOm @Emilymdxn

First book in the 60s trilogy.. This first one covers the year 1962 and the Cuban Missal Crisis. It‘s not the stories that I like about these books, it‘s how the author infuses pages and pics from history as you read the story. They allow you to relive this time in the past. I still want to know how other generations view these books. Born in the sixties, I really like these books. Get out your 45s and listen!

Loved this YA documentary novel that follows an introspective 5th grader through her daily struggles in the midst of the tension-filled 60s.

Setting: Andrews Air Force base in 1962. This was a fun read. I was 10 yo in 1962 and lived through the Cuban missile crisis, crawling under our desks for bomb drills, the ever present threat of nuclear annihilation, JFK, among others. Franny Chapman tries to understand what's going on in the world as well as navigate what's happening with her family and friends.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It's a little younger than I usually engage with, but the History teacher in me loved the historical photographs and quote interspersed in the narrative. On the whole, Wiles did a pretty excellent job of convey the fear of the Cuban Missile Crisis through a child's eyes, and surprised me with complex characters like Uncle Otts
