"Fast, slick and acerbically funny: buckle up and enjoy the ride." Guardian "It reads like a marvellous mash-up of Anita Brookner and Quentin Tarantino." The Times STARRED REVIEW "Rosende smoothly combines dark humor and farce with moving depictions of the grimmer aspects of life. Elmore Leonard fans will look forward to the sequel." Publishers Weekly The story is set in Uruguay, it starts in a Montevideo prison where Diego waits for his lawyer, the slick Dr Antinucci, always raybanned, chain-smoking, never frisked by the prison guards. Diego, betrayed by his partner in crime, was arrested for kidnapping a businessman. But charges will not be pressed. The businessman and his wife have described Diego as duped by his partner, certainly no master criminal, so he will be let out. But Antonucci has plans for him, a favour must be returned for his surprising freedom, he must join forces with the psychopath the Hobo and hold up an armoured truck in Montevideo. The mad and hilarious caper includes the robbery of course which degenerates into appalling violence, a few murders, and the general bungling of affairs by all the men involved. It is the belittled women, including Police Inspector Lima, who end up the true heroines of the story. This seemingly classic lowlife crime story has a powerful message: never, ever underestimate the women. All told with excoriating wit and humour from the Rio de la Plata.

I chose this book because I don't think I've ever read anything set in Uruguay. I haven't read anything by this author before, either. So the whole thing was a surprise box. And yes, a surprise it was.

Rosende wrote a very special book. It's not your typical crime novel. It's not your typical characters. Still, there are always some familiar points to hold on to. I also liked her language, how she uses it.

Imagine the waiting room of the Criminal Court.
No, it's not one of those court waiting rooms you see in American television series, painted in subtle colours and austerely decorated, furnished in dark polished wood, with thick carpets that silence the footsteps of grey-suited lawyers and prosecutors and judges ....No, none of that.

In here, the first thing to hit your nose, even before you are inside, is the smell of caged animals.

rabbitprincess 😍😍excellent choice of picture! 3y
charl08 @rabbitprincess hope to see him in a play one day. For now will have to content myself with Staged! 3y
rabbitprincess @charl08 I desperately want to see Staged but don‘t know of a legal means of watching it in Canada! Sigh. 3y
charl08 @rabbitprincess oh no! That series has been one of the few proper TV belly laughs I've had during app the covid craziness. 3y

Crocodile Tears | Mercedes Rosende

Today she walks down Calle Sarandí, hurrying the short distance to Plaza Matriz among artisans and tourists, yuppies wearing clothes that scream lawyer, ac countant, manager; among beggars with huge coats and misshapen caps, gay couples holding hands, diligent and care fully made-up bilingual secretaries, delivery boys, shivering prostitutes, uniformed teenagers.

“Crocodile Tears” is my first crime fiction read of the year and it‘s also my first read from Uruguay. I was pleasantly surprised by this comic caper and especially it‘s quirky characters. A really enjoyable 4 stars from me!
