The Flame-coloured Dress and Other Stories
The Flame-coloured Dress and Other Stories | José Régio
1 post | 1 read | 5 to read
This collection of stories, Jose Regio's controversial masterpiece Historias de Mulheres, is here translated for the first time into English. Regio creates a gallery of women - women who are outsiders, born into a society in which they are constrained by class, education, money and social expectations. Dulce is the pawn of feckless guardians. Miss Olimpia is trapped by poverty and her own pretensions. Rosa, for her part, refuses to conform to the stereotype of saccharine femininity, with serious consequences for herself and for her world. Some of the women cope, others go under. A few, in unexpected ways, triumph.

A collection of short stories published by Portuguese author Jose Regio in 1946, with its original title “Women and Their Stories“. Although written about 100 years ago, the story lines remain catchy. Centered on women and their limited social condition, he explores with a sense of bitter sorrow the traps of marriage, which threaten to alter their authenticity in a way that strongly echoes today's debate on family-related choices women make.
