Year of the Witch
Year of the Witch: Connecting with Nature's Seasons through Intuitive Magick | Temperance Alden
5 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
In her much-needed and brilliant Year of the Witch, Temperance Alden guides readers to observe their own land, celestial cycles, seasonal cycles, and even their own biological cycles to inform their magickal year.-- Mat Auryn, author of Psychic Witch: A Metaphysical Guide to Meditation, Magick, and Manifestation When we think of the wheel of the year, the Wiccan wheel with its celebrations of the Yule, Beltane, Mabon, and Samhain come to mind. But what about a wheel of the year for the rest of us pagans and witches? As a witch living in sunny South Florida, longtime hereditary witch Temperance Alden has often felt at odds gearing up to celebrate Yule, for example, when it is 76 degrees and sunny outside. Year of the Witch will help readers create their own intuitive practices in harmony with the climate, culture, and local spirits where they live. Its of interest to witches coming off the Wiccan path and looking for a more personal approach to celebrating the rhythms of nature. Year of the Witch covers all aspects of this new, seasonal practice: The origins of the neo-pagan wheel of the year and why it is still so relevant today Culture, historical facts, and traditions associated with the major ceremonies Basic principles of land-based magick How to intuitively connect to the nature below your feet and the local gods Being a custodian to the land and its impact on our spiritual practice

This book reads like the author‘s personal diary & not really a “resource” on the wheel of the year. The chapters feel like they‘re musings & thoughts just pinned together to make a book. Like a “pinterest board” as an analogy the author uses in the book. While it was interesting to read how the author practices, this book didn‘t teach much. I wouldn‘t recommend it to a beginner. It‘s only skim-worthy to get ideas on personalising the wheel.

This book is definitely not what I expected! The first third or so goes over some basics of Wicca and witchcraft. (I never grasped the “intuitive” part—it‘s very prescriptive.) Then it spends a good chunk going over the traditional Wheel of the Year. I did like some of the spells and rituals provided in this section. Then there are two short chapters on creating your own wheel—which is what I thought the whole book would be! That was… 👇🏻

Clare-Dragonfly … my favorite part and definitely could have used more depth. I‘m keeping it for the rituals, that section, and the great bibliography, though! Thank you again, @slategreyskies , for sending it to me! ❤️ 2y

I was so bummed about this book! I thought it was going to be really good. It looked promising. I even purchased a copy since my library didn‘t have it. It was so, so bad. Definitely the most disappointing book I‘ve read in a while. Some of the reviews I read said it was great. Were they even reading the same book? At any rate, I now have a copy of a book I‘ll never finish and never use and just isn‘t for me. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

slategreyskies This is book two of #AwesomeAugust #readathon. @Andrew65 (edited) 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Ugh, it always sucks spending good money on a crap book. I‘m sorry it wasn‘t what you were expecting. Do you have any used bookstores near you that will buy it off you so you can at least make a little money back? 3y
slategreyskies @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm We have one not too far from my house, but it‘s under new ownership, and I haven‘t been inside since it switched owners just before the pandemic. I‘ll have to check to see if they carry witchy books or not. I live in a fairly conservative area, so I‘m not sure. Thanks for the idea, though. I don‘t know why I didn‘t think of that! :) 3y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Aah, gotcha. We have Half Price Books stores in my area and they‘ll buy just about anything. 😅 Good luck! 3y
