When I Was Cool
When I Was Cool: My Life at the Jack Kerouac School | Sam Kashner
3 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
First student of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, Sam Kashner tells with humor and grace his life with the Beats. But the best story is Kashner himself -- the coming-of-age of a young man in the chaotic world of the very idols he hoped to emulate. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

One of my favorite books for #recommendsday. When I Was Cool chronicles a young mans experience in the Jack Kerouac School for Disembodied Poets. Part coming of age, part beatnik history lesson this one will keep you laughing while also giving you a background on the beat's last years. This was my intro to Ginsberg, Burroughs and Corso and it started a life long love affair. If you're interested in the generation, this is a fun starting point.

Litlady Great review .. I love that era! I must recommend to watch the movie, Kill Your Darlings with Dan Radcliffe (Harry Potter) portraying a young Allen Ginsburg and Dane DeHaan as Lucien Carr. Worth checking out to get some background on these beatniks and their early academic and social life. 8y
Mel Read this awhile back - loved it! 8y
Yournewfriendsams @Litlady I'll have to check the movie out! Thanks for the reco ☺️ Glad to hear a beat movie success story because there have been so many failed attempts. I went to the beat museum in SF recently and saw this great note from Kerouac to Marlon Brando asking him to make On The Road into a movie. It was a hoot! 8y
