This book was recommended to me a while back as the quintessential novel of China. May need to get this back on my TBR. Anyone on Litsy read this one?

#RockinMay #ChinaGrove

JenP Yes, I liked it but it is slow paced and very detailed so won't be for everyone. I found it very informative 7y
LeahBergen I haven't read this but I just posted about a modern retelling of it. It looks like a much faster read! 😂 7y
Well-ReadNeck @LeahBergen Thanks! Yes, I'd prefer the re-telling I'm sure! 7y

Cinfhen Great graphics 7y
ErikaSB I read this in college but remember very little about it. All I really remember is that it was kind of slow and that I liked it but very few others in the class did. 7y
Yellowpigeon It's good. It's one of the four classics for a reason. But it can be very hard to get into. I found the retelling much easier to get into 7y

#TBRTuesday- giant Chinese box set edition. Neil Gaiman once praised Journey to the West as one of his favorites, and A Dream of Red Mansions has been on my TBR forever.

Mayread Have you seen or listened to the monkey: journey to the west opera? So good & probably pairs well w your epic book set. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi No! I'll have to check it out. Thank you for the recommendation! 8y
erzascarletbookgasm OMG, A Dream of Red Mansions is a classic and Journey to the West is epic! Journey is so popular that there are opera and mini series adaptations. 8y

CherylDeFranceschi @erzascarletbookgasm Have you read them? Do they live up to the hype? 8y
Mayread If you like Blur or especially Gorillaz, you'll love it. It's a modern take on the Chinese opera. 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @CherylDeFranceschi No, I have not, sadly. I've only watched the mini series of Journey and they are so good. Where did you get your box sets, may I ask? I've only seen them in Chinese language. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi I read they Goodreads looking for info on translations, then decided on these. I got them thru Alibris. 8y
quirkyreader A Dream of Red Mansions is good story. When I read it, it was a very truncated version. I my opinion the best character in Journey To The West is The Monkey King. 🐒 8y
kammartinez Journey to the West is A++ awesome :). I first encountered it as the anime Gensomaden Saiyuki, which is a VERY loose adaptation of the story, and then read the original (in translation) when I went to uni. Later on I found out that a lot of other manga and anime were inspired by this text: the Monkey King is a very popular character, it turns out :). 8y
