Inferno
Inferno: A Memoir of Motherhood and Madness | Catherine Cho
6 posts | 7 read | 13 to read
Inferno is the riveting memoir of a young mother who is separated from her newborn son and husband when she's involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward in New Jersey after a harrowing bout of postpartum psychosis. When Catherine Cho and her husband set off from London to introduce their newborn son to family scattered across the United States, she could not have imagined what lay in store. Before the trips end, she develops psychosis, a complete break from reality, which causes her to lose all sense of time and place, including what is real and not real. In desperation, her husband admits her to a nearby psychiatric hospital, where she begins the hard work of rebuilding her identity. In this unwaveringly honest, insightful, and often shocking memoir Catherine reconstructs her sense of self, starting with her childhood as the daughter of Korean immigrants, moving through a traumatic past relationship, and on to the early years of her courtship with and marriage to her husband, James. She masterfully interweaves these parts of her past with a vivid, immediate recounting of the days she spent in the ward. The result is a powerful exploration of psychosis and motherhood, at once intensely personal, yet holding within it a universal experience of how we love, live and understand ourselves in relation to each other.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Such an interesting memoir about the author‘s psychosis just a few months after her son was born. I felt it was so brave of her to be so forthcoming in sharing her story - I‘m sure some may judge for her for it. I recommend to anyone interested!!

Talk about an opening page?!?! Fascinating look into post partum depression and a new mother‘s life. The book moves between her days in the psych ward, and her memories of growing up in a Korean household, to college, dating and beyond. I couldn‘t put this down last night…

Book 76

This memoir about postpartum psychosis was a quick, interesting read. Written in a disorganized fashion, the reader experiences the psychosis along with Cho. An indescribably terrible thing to happen to a mother at an already difficult time. 3.5 stars

A quiet and powerful book. The author experienced postpartum psychosis a few months after her sons birth. It was a bit slow going at first but I highlighted powerful bits as I read. I‘d love to attend an author talk on this one at some point.

4/5🌟 An intimate, raw and unflinchingly honest read! Cho holds nothing back in this eye opening memoir of motherhood, postpartum psychosis and Korean culture. I have never read or heard about another mothers experience quite like Cho's! She had me hooked from the beginning. Terrifying and heartbreaking. I also enjoyed learning about Korean culture which I am very intrigued to read more about now. Highly reccomend! #memoir #bookreview
