Run River
Run River | Joan Didion
3 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
Joan Didion's electrifying first novel is a haunting portrait of a marriage whose wrong turns and betrayals are at once absolutely idiosyncratic and a razor-sharp commentary on the history of California. Everett McClellan and his wife, Lily, are the great-grandchildren of pioneers, and what happens to them is a tragic epilogue to the pioneer experience, a story of murder and betrayal that only Didion could tell with such nuance, sympathy, and suspense. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

I feel like the word ‘worldbuilding‘ is never used for non speculative fiction novels, but I adore Joan Didion‘s worldbuilding and the slightly melancholy versions of America she puts together. I couldn‘t believe this was her first novel, it felt so effortlessly well put together.

I received this Nook almost 6 years ago now, for my 19th birthday. I never really used it, though. I pulled it out a few days ago because I thought it may come in handy during the honeymoon cruise we are leaving for tomorrow. It still works great! Now I‘m excited about it because I can read all of this great, free classic literature! (Open Library is awesome by the way). Now I‘m just excited about what I can access, regardless of the format.

Sacramento is a small and underrated city but there are still a few books set here. It was fun to spot local places in The Jane Austen Book Club, but it didn't feel like it "needed" to be set here. Run River, on the other hand, has deep Sacramento roots - it was all about place. It was written in the 60s and set in the decades before that, so its Sacramento is very different from mine, but it was still so familiar. #setinmycity #readjanuary
