Escaping Dreamland
Escaping Dreamland: A Novel | Charlie Lovett
5 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
Robert Parrishs childhood obsession with series books like the Hardy Boys and Tom Swift inspired him to become an author. Just as his debut novel becomes a bestseller, his relationship with his girlfriend, Rebecca, begins to fall apart. Robert realizes he must confront his secret demons by fulfilling a youthful promise to solve a mystery surrounding his favorite seriesthe Tremendous Trio. Guided by twelve tattered books and an unidentified but tantalizing fragment of a story, Robert journeys into the history of the books that changed his life, hoping they can help him once again. His odyssey takes him to 1906 Manhattan, a time of steamboats, boot blacks, and Fifth Avenue mansions, but every discovery he makes only leads to more questions. Roberts quest intertwines with the stories of three young people trying to define their places in the world at the dawn of a new and exciting century. Magda, Gene, and Tom not only write the childrens books that Robert will one day love, together they explore the vibrant city on their doorstep, from the Polo Grounds to Coney Islands Dreamland, drawing the reader into the Gilded Age as their own friendships deepen. The connections between the authors, their creations, and Roberts redemptive journey make for a beautifully crafted novel that is an ode to the childrens series books of our past, to New York City, and above all, to the power of love and friendship.

I love a book about books. Charlie Lovett has again struck the right balance between the past and present, keeping both stories moving and packing so much into these 330-ish pages. I didn‘t find this to be as funny as his other novels but his building on historical events was once again, spot on.

Book 3/5 for #NutsinMay

The best part about vaccines is the 15 minute wait after your shot when you can sit and read.

TheBookHippie Agreed 3y
JamieArc I volunteered at a vaccine clinic for a while and it was shocking to me how few people read books as they waited! (edited) 3y
janeycanuck @JamieArc yeah, most people were just staring off into space or at their phones. Kudos to you for volunteering! 3y

BookishMarginalia I still have post-vaccine joy! 3y
MsMelissa Yay! I get my first shot on Thursday and my daughter is eligible as of tomorrow - which is actually more important to me than my vaccine because school needs to be back to normal in September! (edited) 3y
janeycanuck @BookishMarginalia I danced and sang in the car the whole way home. Now I‘m a puddle on the sofa 🤪 3y
janeycanuck @MsMelissa Yay for Thursday! I hope your daughter can get an appt quickly. We need as many teachers and students vaccinated as possible before Sept. I was booked at 15 weeks for my second dose but was told it‘ll likely be a lot earlier because supply is still ramping up. 3y
janeycanuck @TheBookHippie it‘s a good thing the chairs are plastic, otherwise, I‘d stay for hours “as a precaution” 😋 3y
TheBookHippie @janeycanuck It is also very quiet. I get to stay for hours because I‘m fun and I did get a lot of reading done! I found it odd both times that I was the only one with a book!! 3y
BiblioLitten I got mine four days back too and I caught up on my reading too!! My second is at 16 weeks but they did talk about having it earlier. 3y
BiblioLitten @TheBookHippie I read on my phone. I just carried my phone and ID. There might have been other e-readers too. 3y
TheBookHippie @BiblioLitten literally people just sat 😅 weird 3y

This was an enjoyable historical fiction read! Not perfect, but well researched. I enjoyed the historical parts more than the present-day sections. The publishing and comic book elements were a fun element of the book.

I received this ARC for my honest review.
