In 1982, a car overturns on a remote West Australian road. Nobody is hurt, but the impact is felt for decades. Nicole and Samantha Cooper both remember the summer day when their mother, Tina, lost control of their car but not in quite the same way. It is only after Tinas death, almost four decades later, that the sisters are forced to reckon with the repercussions of the crash. Nicole, after years of aimless drifting, has finally found love, and yet cant quite commit. And Samantha is hiding something that might just tear apart the life shes worked so hard to build for herself. The Spill explores the cycles of love, loss and regret that can follow a family through the years moments of joy, things left unsaid, and things misremembered. Above all, it is a deeply moving portrait of two sisters falling apart and finding a way to fit back together.

This book was a Christmas present 😊 I really enjoyed it! Set in Western Australia it is the story of a complicated family - in particular two sisters Nicole and Samantha. The format is interesting as the timeline moves around to show how past events are driving current behaviours. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

If this had not been a book club book I probably would have bailed. Book club discussion was good and I had been hoping it would make me like the book more but it didn‘t. Maybe it is an age thing. Also I‘m not a fan of so much dialogue. It missed the mark for me.

A debut novel by a Perth writer who went to school with a friend of mine.

The two main characters are sisters, about my age. I enjoyed the story: an exploration of the relationship between sisters & the trauma in their family background. I liked the Perth references & heading back to the 80s & 90s. It felt real & relatable.

It was not particularly literary & at times the writing felt a little clunky, but I found it a really entertaining read.

CarolynM Looking forward to this one. 4y

I am destined to read this book. First @Rissreads messaged me about it, telling me someone in her book club went to school with the author. Then I went on holiday with another friend who happened to be reading it. She told me she went to school with Imbi!

Then last night at my book club another friend chose it for us to read this month, and that friend happens to currently send her child to that very same high school. #serendipity #localauthor

Another fantastic Australian book. This is written by a West Aussie who went to school with one of my bookclub members. I loved that it was set in my home town and I could visualise a lot of the places and settings. A heartfelt story of sisters about love, loss and forgiveness.

CarolynM I've got a copy of this waiting for me. Glad to hear you enjoyed it🙂 4y
Jeg I‘ve not heard of this. Will have to search out. Thanks. Will be nice to read a West Aussie book. 4y
