Night. Sleep. Death. the Stars.
Night. Sleep. Death. the Stars. | Joyce Carol Oates
5 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
The bonds of family are tested in the wake of a profound tragedy, providing a look at the darker side of our society by one of our most enduringly popular and important writersNight Sleep Death The Stars is a gripping examination of contemporary America through the prism of a family tragedy: when a powerful parent dies, each of his adult children reacts in startling and unexpected ways, and his grieving widow in the most surprising way of all. Stark and penetrating, Joyce Carol Oates's latest novel is a vivid exploration of race, psychological trauma, class warfare, grief, and eventual healing, as well as an intimate family novel in the tradition of the author's bestselling We Were the Mulvaneys.

Pickpick

I could relate to characters but it felt strange how main characters' family members were barely mentioned.

This didn't go under my skin even though I loved to follow how everyone went through their sorrow.

I loved the writing but wasn't happy with the ending. Which didn't exist.

This was really pleasurable and easy to read.

A pick or a so-so - it's a very good story, but it truly did not require an 800-page treatment.

Inspiration for title from Walt Whitman

Do all the novels published by JCO show up here? This one is dedicated to her husband in memoriam.

It's like fine print here, there are so many.

Looking forward to diving into this 800 page beast once I'm finished reading Ridgerunner.
