Sydney Reilly has a bad feeling about going home to San Francisco before she even gets on the plane. How could she not? Her mother is Lila Shorethe Lila Shorea film star who prizes her beauty and male attention above all elsecertainly above her daughter. But Sydneys worries multiply when she discovers that Lila is involved with the dangerous Jake, an art dealer with shady connections. Jake loves all beautiful objects, and Syndey can feel his eyes on her whenever hes around. And hes not the only one. Sydney is starting to attract attentiongood and badwherever she goes: from sweet, handsome Nicco Ricci, from the unsettling construction worker next door, and even from Lila. Behaviors that once seemed like misunderstandings begin to feel like threats as the summer grows longer and hotter. Its unnerving, how beauty is complicated, and objects have histories, and you can be looked at without ever being seen. But real danger, crimes of passion, the kind of stuff where someone gets killedit only mostly happens in the movies, Sydney is sure. Until the night something life-changing happens on the stairs that lead to the beach. A thrilling night that goes suddenly very wrong. When loyalties are called into question. And when Sydney learns a terrible truth: beautiful objects can break.

I loved Caletti‘s A Heart in a Body in the World & the conversation we had about it was one of the best ever in my book club. Unfortunately, I‘ve not enjoyed her subsequent books quite as much. In this one, Sydney is spending the summer with her Hollywood starlet mother. And her mother‘s sketchy boyfriend. I wish there was a better story to this YA story about body image, attraction, harassment and, art. Important topics, ok execution & story.

We‘ll, it‘s been weeks since I‘ve posted on her again… 🙈 I don‘t know why I‘m finding it so hard to say active on here, but I‘m trying!

Listening to the tagged audiobook while I make some more press on nails for the Etsy shop! If you‘d like to see a specific book cover or bookish picture made into a set of nails, tag me in the photo, and I‘ll do my best to make it happen! ❤️‍🔥

At 16, Sydney is suddenly aware that she‘s visible to men. This book covers it all: what it‘s like to be a woman living among men, the “rules” women follow whether they want to or not, and questions why the same choices elicit different reactions based on gender. This book argues that women have every right to be themselves and take up space in the world without being judged or objectified.

AkashaVampie This sounds awesome. 3y
802Librarian @AkashaVampie It was! Though it also made me sad and angry at how accurate it was. 3y

Girl, Unframed is part mystery inspired by the murder of actress Lana Turner's boyfriend by her daughter in 1958, and part what happens to young women under the male gaze. Here Sydney is the daughter of actress Lila Shores, and has to deal with her mother's brutal but charming and connected (as in Mafia) boyfriend, Jake. Sydney is also falling in love for the first time, & dealing with all the sexism. Wish the book had focused more on the After.

A coming of age story that has an impending sense of doom right from the beginning. Sydney is spending the summer with her famous actress mother and has reservations about it. This book oozes tension and we are just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Sydney deals with what many women deal with-the uncomfortable looks, leers, and remarks from men. We see how Sydney tries to process and deal with these things and how they impact her.
