Dirt: Adventures in Lyon as a Chef in Training, Father, and Sleuth Looking for the Secret of French Cooking | Bill Buford
5 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
From the author of the best-selling, widely acclaimed Heat--a new hilariously self-deprecating, highly obsessive account of the author's adventures, this time, in the world of French haute cuisine Bill Buford turns his inimitable attention from Italian cuisine to the food of France. Baffled by the language, but convinced that he can master the art of French cooking--or at least get to the bottom of why it is so revered-- he begins what becomes a five-year odyssey by shadowing the esteemed French chef Michel Richard, in Washington, D.C. But when Buford (quickly) realizes that a stage in France is necessary, he goes--this time with his wife and three-year-old twin sons in tow--to Lyon, the gastronomic capital of France. Studying at L'Institut Bocuse, cooking at the storied, Michelin-starred La Mre Brazier, enduring the endless hours and exacting rigeur of the kitchen, Buford becomes a man obsessed--with proving himself on the line, proving that he is worthy of the gastronomic secrets he's learning, proving that French cooking actually derives from (mon dieu!) the Italian. With his signature humor, sense of adventure, and masterly ability to immerse himself--and us--in his surroundings, Bill Buford has written what is sure to be the food-lover's book of the year.

Charming. Well written. Felt a connection. Great characterization. A story of a chef who uproots his family to study French cooking in Lyon, France. Already a book I want to read. So why only three stars. Because it‘s too long. It runs out of steam about 1/2 way through the book. And you‘re reading it and wondering if it will ever end. It burns out of its charm. I did enjoy it until I didn‘t.

A chef memoir but written by a journalist. He went to live and work in France to experience a French kitchen and learn.

I‘ve just started this for my IRL book club (which is now actually virtual 🙄) and I find myself immediately caught up in it.

I loved the author‘s two previous books (Among the Thugs and Heat) so I‘m expecting good things! 👍🏻

LeslieO I love foodie memoirs. I have Heat but haven‘t read it yet. 3y

I can‘t believe no one else has posted about this book! This is a fascinating account of Buford‘s experience moving his family from NYC to Lyon and training as a French chef. The training and kitchen parts are interesting, but I loved his overall take on the culture of the city and its food industry inhabitants. He narrates the audiobook and it‘s excellent.

LeahBergen I recently bought this one! 👍🏻 3y
