Fall wig first into a world of big hair, high heels and even higher stakes in George Lester's debut novel Boy Queen. Life's a drag until you try . . . Robin Cooper's life is falling apart. While his friends prepare to head off to University, Robin is looking at a pile of rejection letters from drama schools up and down the country, and facing a future without the people he loves the most. Everything seems like it's ending, and Robin is scrabbling to find his feet. Unsure about what to do next and whether he has the talent to follow his dreams, he and his best friends go and drown their sorrows at a local drag show, where Robin realises there might be a different, more sequinned path for him . . . With a mother who won't stop talking, a boyfriend who won't acknowledge him and a best friend who is dying to cover him in glitter make up, there's only one thing for Robin to do: bring it to the runway.

Pickpick

Just as cute & gay as the author & I adored it. A great respite from my usual sad bitch books. It does explore some serious issues but mostly is fun, light, & sweet. Loved the relationship b/t Robin & his mom, loved seeing Robin discover the magic of drag & find something to help him cope w/the pain of rejection from dance school. One of his friends got on my nerves, & I wish we got more after his first show, but overall I super loved this. 4/5 ⭐️

‘Carrie has been hosting these nights for...‘ Kaye turns to Carrie, an evil smile spreading across his face. ‘How long has it been, my dear? When did the dinosaurs go extinct?‘

Carrie sits up straight and blinks, her mouth forming a perfect ‘O‘. ‘I don‘t know, dear, but they clearly missed one.‘

Other people are standing around high tables, all chatting conspiratorially, smiling, happy. There are men holding hands with men, women kissing women, men in crop tops and make-up, people dressed so freaking fabulously it‘s like I am on an entirely different planet. And I don‘t think I ever want to leave.

[Ah, echoes of my first Pride. I miss my old super queer life! Even post-COVID (if we ever are), I‘ll still be an invalid shut-in. Le sigh...]

I pretty much never read more than one book at a time, but with a poetry book, it makes more sense to dip in and out of it. This one is divided into five sections so maybe I‘ll do one section a day. And then I‘m super excited for Boy Queen because the author is one of my favorite Booktubers, and this novel is based somewhat on his own experience doing drag. It just looks like a lot of fun and I need that right now.

I was predisposed to enjoy this book, which is why I enthusiastically asked for an ARC from the publisher. I adored the drama, the theatre kid vibes, the connections between characters, and all things drag. This honestly brought tears to my eyes and I cannot wait for you all to read it.
