Reflections on the Psalms
Reflections on the Psalms | C. S. Lewis
We delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointed consummation. The Psalms were written as songs; we should read them as poetry, in the spirit of lyric, not as sermons or instructions. But they are also shrouded in mystery, and in this careful reading from one of our most trusted fellow travelers, C.S. Lewis helps us begin to reveal their meaning in our daily lives and in the world. Reflecting again and anew on these beloved passages, we can find both joy and difficulty, but also, always, real enlightenment and moments of transcendent grace. "This book may not tell the reader all he would like to know about the Psalms, but it will tell him a good deal he will not like to know about himself." Times Literary Supplement "[Lewis] . . . displays in this volume the same keen insight and gifted tongue that have made him one of the most highly respected essayists using the English language." Chicago Sunday Tribune "Full of illuminating observations." New York Times

Pickpick

The German title of this book is a bit confusing, I prefer the original English one, since it states more clearly what this book is about. In German it's called “Praying with the Psalms“, which states something totally different than what Lewis is writing about.

I recommend the book to readers who know their Bible, Lewis assumes that those who read this book know the Psalms and the Bible verses he refers to. Lewis' thoughts about the Psalms ⬇

Jari-chan are clear and interesting to read. They give the texts a new and deeper meaning, and help us, building our own view on the Psalms and the Testaments.

It wasn't what I expected to find, but still a good and powerful book.

TheAromaofBooks I feel like Lewis is a very approachable author - his writing has depth & challenge to it, yet is still readable & practical. 3y
Jari-chan @TheAromaofBooks I feel exactly the same! Well said! 3y

After reading Harold S. Kushner‘s 9 Essential Things I‘ve Learned About Life, I wanted to read more about the psalms. C.S. Lewis is not an author I‘m wild about but this book was tolerable. It‘s nice to read a man of unshakeable faith still be reasonable about evolution and science. But of course Lewis is British with none of our American fanaticism. “The shadows have indicated (at least to my heart) something more about the light.” - C.S. Lewis

Guys, I've been on such a C.S. Lewis kick lately. I'd like to read everything he's ever written. I just finished this #audiobook, and it was lovely. A concise, introductory discussion of the Psalms, including their types, problems, and ways to read them. It makes me want to go reread the Psalms now! Also, #audiostitching is progressing!

drokka It's really taking shape. 😀 7y
