Murder in the Mill-Race
Murder in the Mill-Race | E.C.R. Lorac
7 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Mystery crime fiction written in the Golden Age of Murder "Never make trouble in the village" is an unspoken law, but it's a binding law. You may know about your neighbor's sins and shortcomings, but you must never name them aloud. It'd make trouble, and small societies want to avoid trouble." When Dr Raymond Ferens moves to a practice at Milham in the Moor in North Devon, he and his wife are enchanted with the beautiful hilltop village lying so close to moor and sky. At first, they see only its charm, but soon they begin to uncover its secrets—envy, hatred, and malice. Everyone says that Sister Monica, warden of a children's home, is a saint—but is she? A few months after the Ferens' arrival her body is found drowned in the mill-race. Chief Inspector Macdonald faces one of his most difficult cases in a village determined not to betray its dark secrets to a stranger.

Hoping to finish up this mystery with lunch 🤞

Ruthiella How is it? On par with ? 7mo
quietjenn @Ruthiella I enjoyed it. It's not quite as evocative of place as Fell, but I didn't figure it out until the end and continue to really like Inspector MacDonald! 7mo

Thank you for passing this along to me, @catiewithac As per usual, your package came at just the right time. I was also really excited about the Washi tape - I had been covering them for a while, but never pushed the purchase button, so thank you! Lastly, the card was beautiful! The best design I‘ve seen yet 😊

Average cosy mystery set in post-WWII England. The writing isn‘t particular strong nor are the characters. The Devonshire moors and country village in summertime are the real stars here. I‘ll probably read more from this author just because she sets her novels in various rural English counties. 🛖 🌾

LeahBergen And you can‘t beat these covers. 😊 3y

This was just what I needed for a hot Saturday afternoon and evening. The story rattled along nicely. But now I want scones (mmmmm Devonshire cream) and it is too hot to bake 🥵

The protagonist of The Women of the Copper Country, which I just finished, was named Annie Clements.

Now I have just met her name twin, Anne Clements, in Murder in the Mill-Race.

Oh my. This is really good. A clever mystery with a brilliant setting and a very well worked out resolution. Would happily read more by Lorac. Which is good because I have another one on the shelf!
