'If you like your novels wide-ranging, ambitious, socially panoramic, and engaged in the most important issues of the day, Amanda Craig is the writer for you. For more than twenty years now she has been anatomising the state of the British nation with wit and empathy' Jonathan Coe 'She's such a skilful storyteller who vividly dramatises our lives with wit, wisdom and compassion' Bernardine Evaristo When Hannah is invited into the First-Class carriage of the London to Penzance train by Jinni, she walks into a spider's web. Now a poor young single mother, Hannah once escaped Cornwall to go to university. But once she married Jake and had his child, her dreams were crushed into bitter disillusion. Her husband has left her for Eve, rich and childless, and Hannah has been surviving by becoming a cleaner in London. Jinni is equally angry and bitter, and in the course of their journey the two women agree to murder each other's husbands. After all, they are strangers on a train - who could possibly connect them? But when Hannah goes to Jinni's husband's home the next night, she finds Stan, a huge, hairy, ugly drunk who has his own problems - not least the care of a half-ruined house and garden. He claims Jinni is a very different person to the one who has persuaded Hannah to commit a terrible crime. Who is telling the truth - and who is the real victim? The Times - Books for 2020 Sunday Times - Books to look out for in 2020 Observer - Fiction to look out for in 2020, Alex Preston: 'The Golden Rule does what her novels do best, wrapping the reader in a tight, lean narrative, showing the strangeness that lies at the heart of normal-seeming lives' Daily Mail - 2020 Top Pick, Stephanie Cross: 'Craig's The Golden Rule promises to be a typically sharp and hugely satisfying page-turner about two women who decide to murder each other's husbands' i paper - 'If there were any justice, the versatile Craig would be one of our most lauded novelists. Her eighth novel [The Golden Rule] takes inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train to spin a story of deception and deceit' New Statesman - Books for 2020 Financial Times - Books for 2020 'shrewd contemporary satirist Amanda Craig reworks Strangers on a Train' Praise for Amanda Craig 'Terrific, page-turning, slyly funny' India Knight 'As satisfying a novel as I have read in years' Sarah Perry 'Amanda Craig is one of the most brilliant and entertaining novelists now working in Britain' Alison Lurie

Thriller! Romance! Social commentary! Does this Strangers on a Train meets Beauty and the Beast book take on too much? Absolutely! But I was so here for it all.

I am counting the tagged as another #bookspinBail I just cannot get into it. But out of 2021, I am checking off 21 #bookspin and #doublespins, I had 3 bails (not so bad!) and I am rolling over 3 books that I do really want to read, I just never got to them. Thanks @thearomaofbooks for all your work on this challenge! What a fun year, and so many books off that TBR.

TheAromaofBooks YAY!!! What a fabulous year!!! I love your update summary, too!!! 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @TheAromaofBooks I hope this helps you too! I am planning on tagging you next year in all the things and doing this summary at the end. You get tagged in so much I don't know how you can keep up. 2y
TheAromaofBooks LOL I have to do everything from my computer (not the app) or else I totally lose track. I know some people still fall between the cracks!! Hopefully my new system of having people use the Google form will help next year - then I can just relax and enjoy everyone's posts instead of worrying about whether I'm remembering to check them off for the right thing!! 2y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

I finished this last night as I thought the #womensprize shortlist came out today... oops! Anyway, it wouldn‘t change my predictions anyway. Great book that I felt totally immersed in but just didn‘t have that special ‘something‘ to warrant being a nominee.

Two women meet on a train by chance and agree to kill each other‘s husbands. Loved the MC (as she was a bookworm) and would definitely recommend as a ‘light‘ but satisfying read.

Caroline2 Sounds intriguing, stacked. 😉 3y
Cathythoughts Plot sounds great 👍🏻 3y
squirrelbrain @Caroline2 @Cathythoughts - there were a few eye rolling moments but for the most part it was a great read. 3y

‘There are people who read out of necessity, and people who read out of love‘.

I wasn‘t sure what to expect from this #womensprize longlist book but I‘m loving it so far - I‘ve read nearly half of it this afternoon.

The MC is a book-lover so it‘s full of quotes, stories and anecdotes about books.... ❤️

KatieB I just picked this up from the library yesterday and wasn‘t feeling very inspired by the cover. Glad to hear you‘re enjoying it! 3y

Mehso-so

This was an interesting read but for me it dragged quite a bit in the middle, its less of a thriller than I expected. The story focuses more on Hannah's life and her time in Cornwall. The ending however was very good and I really enjoyed it. I did find Jake's character seemed to change quite dramatically from how he is portrayed at the start which didn't quite sit right. I liked Hannah and her dedication to looking after her daughter #Netgalley 3*
