Former child prodigy and rich-girl kleptomaniac, Esterrenamed into the gentile Carleen for her own protectionis incarcerated after a botched heist. For two decades, time is the enemy. Her twenties and thirties crawl by in stifling isolation. When finally let loose onto the streets of New York, she finds a job wrestling spoiled canines as a dog walker in Manhattan's most elite neighborhoods, relating better with their brutish instincts than with their human owners. Determined to also prove herself a real person, Carleen tries to reconnect with her estranged and ferociously Orthodox daughter. Amid the strained brunch dates, unsent letters, and the continuing trauma of prison, Carleen begins a slow and halting process of self-discovery. Strikingly funny and self aware, this belated coming-of-age novel asks the question: How do you restart after crashing your first chance at life?

Time to start the day with a walk. Looking forward to cooking and an afternoon with a friend.

Alright Monday morning I got you! Walked the 2 youngest kids to school, then looped back around and picked up my boy and continued on! I need to remember this feeling of accomplishment. #bfc #teamfitlit #pitbullsoflitsy #dogsoflitsy #dobby #applewatch

alisiakae Way to go! I am really going to miss my daily walks to/from my daughter‘s school. She starts middle school this year which is not in walking distance. 5y

‪A little break from reading with a walk. ‬Misch-Evie-ous definitely approves.

My plan is to walk the dogs, then get in pajamas, crawl under the covers, and read. Don't want to start a new physical book before I travel so I might have to use the kindle. (That's what mine is for -- travel.)

My favorite book of the summer so far. Weird, dark, bitingly funny and a little fantastical at times. What a read!

AmyWrites I've never heard of this one! Harper looks a little worried about it though. 😃 8y
Christimariea @AmyWrites I liked that the book defied easy categorization...which was true of Elizabeth Swados in general! 8y
AmyWrites Is it magical realism? 8y
AmyWrites I ask because I despise magical realism, fantasy and sci-fi. 😃 8y
Christimariea Oh no, not at all, @AmyWrites. It's a story about a woman trying to build her life after prison. It's horrifying in parts, laugh out loud in others, a mother-daughter story, a social diatribe on the prison system...its just hard to say what it "is." I enjoyed it a lot though. 8y
