After the Hunley was found and raised, a number of researchers were working toward learning more about what happened. Biomedical engineer Rachel Lance was one of them and details here her efforts to determine what killed the men on board. I found this absolutely fascinating with accessible, well explained science. (To be clear, this is a science book, not a history book.)

This was about the HL Hunley, which was a Civil War submarine that is considered to be the first successful combat sub. It sunk the ship and then it immediately sunk too, so I'm not sure how successful it actually was. For 131 years, it was missing until it was found in 1995 with the bodies of the crew still at their stations. It became a mystery as to what caused it to sink and what killed the crew. Rachel writes about her process of solving it.

NicoleCeBallos The Friends of the Hunley still refuses to accept Rachel's explanation for why it sunk and makes no reference to her or the book on their website. 2y

Mehso-so

This was an interesting book about the HL.Hunley that was a confederate submarine that was buryed in the ocean off the coast of Fort Sumter. It was well told, but there were a lot of part of the book that went over my head. The parts that were interesting were parts about the authors research and their work on their PHD as well as the history of the Hunley. But when they started getting into the mechanics of the submarine I was lost.
