Elephants on Acid and Other Bizarre Experiments. Alex Boese
Elephants on Acid and Other Bizarre Experiments. Alex Boese | Alex Boese
5 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
When Tusko the elephant woke in his pen on August 3, 1962, little did he know that he was about to become the test subject in an experiment to determine what happens to an elephant given a massive dose of LSD. This book reveals the results of this scientific trial and scores of other outrageous, amusing, and provocative experiments.

Boese really isn't as uncomfortable with some of these experiments on animals as he ought to be. Yuck.

Not very unique in terms of which ~weird experiments~ he chooses to write about -- maybe it's because I read so widely in pop-science, but I knew of most of these so far.

Except the one where the ants emptied their nest of water during flooding by drinking the water and peeing it out. That was new.

Mehso-so

I love the cover but the cover story isn‘t such a hoot and it didn‘t end well for the elephant. A good book to dip into but some of the experiments were clearly unethical and others downright cruel. Some hidden nuggets: Wilder Penfield‘s brain-mapping experiments were pioneering and clearly opened the way for massively helpful and informative developments in neuroscience. Overall, a bitty book with as many misses as hits. Very so-so.

Finally I'm at the chapter the book was named after.
