Amanda Sinclair has to fight harder than most for everything she has after fleeing the cult that left her brother dead at her mother’s hand. Amanda works a quiet job in quality control for a small cosmetics company, trying to leave her past behind her—until she learns that her mother has committed suicide in the mental ward where she’s been locked away for the past ten years. At first, Amanda believes that her mother killed herself, but when she looks through the personal belongings left behind, it seems her death may be related to the upcoming parole hearing for cult leader Patrick Collier. Teaming up with her mother’s psychologist, Amanda starts to peel away the layers of secrets that she’s built between herself and her own past, and what she finds is a truth that’s almost too big to believe.

I really enjoyed this mystery. A cult, murders, secrets, lies...what's not to like? There are several plot lines developed and main character Amanda's narrative and self-deprecating humor and internal dialogue makes it an excellent mystery!

Panpan

I don't enjoy or really believe in panning books, but due to the writing, this one is pretty bad. She has written several YA and romance books and this one reads like a YA book. The sad part is there is such a great premise for the book. The story is ok, but the writing ruins it. Sadly, a pan.

Reviewsbylola I rarely pan books only because I usually bail before I get to the end! 😂 Sorry this one didn't work out for you. 8y
NerdyRev I would have bailed, but it was a review book, so I had to finish it. 8y

Started a few hours ago and am halfway finished. Cults, suicide, and murder. Her mom's suicide seems straightforward, but when our protagonist is poisoned, shoved in front of a car, and almost run over, things seem odd. Did I mention her mother murdered her younger brother to appease a cult?

NerdyRev So far a very "simple" read. Quick, short sentences. I thought it was a YA book, but it isn't. 8y
