Brainstorm
Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain | Daniel J. Siegel MD
2 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
In this New York Timesbestselling book, Dr. Daniel Siegel shows parents how to turn one of the most challenging developmental periods in their childrens lives into one of the most rewarding. Between the ages of twelve and twenty-four, the brain changes in important and, at times, challenging ways. In Brainstorm, Dr. Daniel Siegel busts a number of commonly held myths about adolescencefor example, that it is merely a stage of immaturity filled with often crazy behavior. According to Siegel, during adolescence we learn vital skills, such as how to leave home and enter the larger world, connect deeply with others, and safely experiment and take risks. Drawing on important new research in the field of interpersonal neurobiology, Siegel explores exciting ways in which understanding how the brain functions can improve the lives of adolescents, making their relationships more fulfilling and less lonely and distressing on both sides of the generational divide.

This! I have two teenagers and am re-reading this book to remind myself what they‘re going through right now. 😜 I forget how much wiring is yet to be done in their brains! 🧠

Lcsmcat When I was teaching high school a clinician at a workshop described adolescence as living in a house while it‘s being remodeled. 4y
Onceuponatime @Lcsmcat Yes, that‘s a great analogy! 4y
Hooked_on_books The most telling thing I‘ve read about studies in adolescents is their inability to recognize facial expressions of emotions. Adults can guess the correct emotion every time and teens only get half of them right. I find that extraordinary. 4y
Onceuponatime @Hooked_on_books Wow, that‘s interesting! Now I want to give my kids a test and see how they do. 😮 What I‘m learning is the there is still a big disconnect between the “emotional” brain and the “logical” brain until about age 24...so they probably wouldn‘t pass this test just yet. 😆 4y
