I‘m slowly making my way through Swedish on the Duolingo app. I‘m still in the beginner levels. If this is something that a beginner needs to know for traveling in Sweden, then I totally understand why so many Swedish novels are so dark and murder-y.

Translation: “There is a man with a knife behind the curtain!

CocoReads 🤣🤣 when my youngest was in high school taking Spanish 3 or 4 she said all the short stories they had to read were bizarre like that. I never went beyond Spanish 2 and all I really remember is how to ask where my beer is. Or my head. Or the bathroom. I really must try duolingo. I‘ve always wanted to give another language a shot! 3y
mhillis That‘s so funny! I‘m studying Czech on Duolingo and this week I got the sentence “Matej, why are you eating cats and dogs?” 🤣 3y
Amiable @CocoReads I probably will never be proficient in Swedish, but at least I‘ll know how to tell the police when there‘s a man with a knife behind the curtain! 😀 But at least Duolingo is free, so there‘s that. 3y

Amiable @mhillis LOL!! That‘s funny! Earlier in the app I got the sentence, “whose reindeer is that?” Apparently in Sweden people have a problem with keeping track of their reindeer. 😄 (edited) 3y
zezeki I'm also learning Swedish on Duolingo, I took a long break, but I plan on getting back into it. 3y
batsy 😂 3y
Clare-Dragonfly 😂 I‘m learning Finnish on duolingo. Apparently one of the most important words for me to learn is “velho”—meaning wizard! 3y
Amiable @Clare-Dragonfly OK, now I‘M excited to know the Finnish word for “wizard!” Thank you! 😀 (edited) 3y
Amiable @zezeki Better hurry up and get back to it before you find a man with a knife behind a curtain! 😀 3y
Ruthiella 😂😂😂 3y
tenar This is too funny! I‘ve been doing French for a few months, and my favorite thing I‘ve learned is still from the opening lessons: ‘Are you a horse?‘ I‘m definitely saving that line for the right moment. Good luck with your Swedish! 3y
Amiable @tenar I did the German on Duolingo for a while and one of my favorite lines was “is he still alive?” I guess that‘s probably important to know if you are there for Oktoberfest? 😀 3y

Pickpick

The stories are well-written and it was very interesting to learn about some new Swedish mystery writers. Definitely a pick. Styles are different in each story and great for everyone who wants to start with scandinavian literature.
