Little Josephine
Little Josephine: Memory in Pieces | Valérie Villieu
3 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
The firsthand account of an unlikely friendship between a visiting nurse and her most special patient, Josephine. When Valérie first met Josephine, she knew she would be embarking on a unique journey. Though vastly different in age and appearance, their connection was instantaneous. Humor quickly became their language, their playground, and despite the destabilizing troubles Joséphine faced, they were able to find new meaning in being "alive," together. A true tale of friendship, aging, and acceptance.

Valérie examines her experiences caring for a senior with Alzheimer's through intriguing page layouts and stark visual metaphors. She conveys not only her own feelings, but those of the woman throughout, and shows systemic problems in France (though they apply more widely) facing seniors who can no longer care for themselves. #Comic #NonfictionComics

Written by the French equivalent of a home health aide, it is clear by her work with Josephine that nurse Valerie truly cares about the elderly patients suffering from dementia or Alzheimer‘s that she works with. Josephine‘s story reminded me a bit of my grandfather‘s and was both sweet and sad.

This was hard reading. Not level wise, but emotional. It‘s about a woman's experience as a helper to another woman with Alzheimer. It does not take place in the US, but the experiences are similar. People with no one left for social offices to deal with that have too little time, and too little staff. I won‘t say I enjoyed this book because it was a sad reminder about what happens to older individuals with no family to look after them.

LibrarianRyan But it was well done and well worth the read.
