Hinrich takes his existance at face value. His wife, on the other hand, has always been more interested in the after-life. Or so it seemed. When she dies of a stroke, Hinrich goes through her papers, only to discover a totally different perspective on their marriage. So commences, an intellectual game of shifting realities.

Hinrich finds his wife Doro dead at her desk, with an annotated manuscript of his in front of her. She had things to say about his embryonic novel, about him and about their life together, and it's not pleasant. It's also at odds with his view of himself and his own memories (although those are unreliable too). This definitely wasn't a feel-good novella, but it made me think.

A very interesting novella from the great pereine press. A man has to relook at his marriage after he finds his wifes body and her notes on his forgotten manuscript.

Oof, this is a hard hitter for fewer than 150 pages! Written (and translated) with enviable clarity this is a tale of a long marriage whose foundations of sand are only revealed when Doro, the wife, is killed by a stroke. Here we have the twisted, conflicting realities two people can build. The deceptions and disappointments, the limits of love and loyalty and yet how all of this can be disguised so thoroughly even the participants don't see it

Next up in my #litsypartyofone, another foray into another of my favourite #indie presses and my second read from the pile of 9 books I bought yesterday. Can we ever really know those we love?
