This was my first polish translation and I did take me a good few chapters to get into the style of the writing, once I was in although I didnt find it unputdownable, I did kind of like it. It's an intriguing plot line thats for sure.

I wanted to like this book, but didn't. It made me unhappy and anxious while I was reading it. I like dark books, but this one was downright grim. I am also not sure if the book was badly written or poorly translated, but I found the story and language confusing and hard to follow in many places, with an artificially twisty plot. I am curious to read other books by this author to see if they are better. He's won several awards in Poland.

This book is very dark so far, verging on grotesque at times. Perhaps it doesn't seem as raw in its native Polish, or perhaps the Polish worldview and mode of storytelling is simply more blunt. Neither would surprise me. Also, I'm pretty sure I never want to visit Warmia after the extensive descriptions of its cold, wet, and dreary weather.

"The fog must have been gifted with awareness, because rather than mindlessly enveloping him, it cunningly crept under his coat, pushing its way between the buttons of his jacket and shirt to wrap him in its cold, damp embrace."

I began this book on a motorcycle trip, alternating the Kindle audible narration with reading the e-book text. The narrator was excellent & the opening really drew me in, but a half hour or so in, the story seemed to lag & I found my mind wandering a bit, particularly since some of the Polish references were lost on me. I'm really glad I stuck it out; this is a wonderful, winding murder mystery that kept me on my toes. Definitely worth the time!

Not often do I run across a book set in Poland. This one will count toward my around the world reading challenge.
