5 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is a Christmas Classic written in 1816, by E. T. A. Hoffmann on which the famous ballet The Nutcracker is based. In the story young Marie Stahlbaum's favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. The story begins on Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house. Marie, seven, and her brother, Fritz, eight, sit outside the parlor speculating about what kind of present their godfather, Drosselmeyer, who is a clockmaker and inventor, has made for them. They are at last allowed in, where they receive many splendid gifts

This is the 1816 novella that the classic Christmas ballet is based on. There are significant differences between the story and the ballet, not the least of which the main character is not Clara, but Maria. Clara is merely one of Maria's dolls. This story is weird and dark in that special way only early 19th-century German kid lit has. Also, how old is Maria supposed to be? So confusing.

Pickpick

I‘ve read & watched dozens of adaptations of this but this is the first time I‘ve read the original, & I loved it! But how much of that is bc I grew up loving it & how much is because it genuinely has the kind of magic that makes something spawn dozens of adaptations? It totally does! But it also has some disturbing elements. What I loved was how many connections I saw to other creative pieces. Both ones that inspired this & ones inspired by this.

IndoorDame On the disturbing side, at the start we‘re told the main character is 7 yrs old, and at the end we‘re told she gets married. Even with the most generous math, that makes her maybe 9? In the interim her parents try to gaslight her into thinking maybe her experiences are only fever dreams, & forbid her from taking about them. 1y
tpixie @IndoorDame interesting 🤨. Well maybe there‘s magic aging dances in the story! 1y
IndoorDame @tpixie haha. The ballet is actually based on an early retelling of this so she may actually be slightly older in that version. My general sense of Clara (since her name usually gets changed in later versions) is that she‘s 10🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
Aimeesue I read this for the first time a few years ago - definitely has some odd bits! 1y
tpixie @IndoorDame interesting. I haven‘t read it. I‘ll have to make a project of it some day! 1y

“During the long, long day of the of twenty-fourth of December, the children of Doctor Stahlbaum were not permitted to enter the parlor, much less the adjoining drawing-room.” #FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl

One of my seasonal traditions is reading or watching a version of The Nutcracker. We had an intricate pop-up version of it when I was little that my mom would read me around Christmas and she was always as entranced as me because she was a former ballerina. This year I saw that the original Hoffman version is one of the Hoopla bonus borrows this month so I‘m kicking my readathons off with it. #WinterReadathon #MidwinterSolace #WinterCosyReadathon

Andrew65 Loving this, think I need to check it out. 1y
IndoorDame @Andrew65 at maybe 30% and loving it so far so I‘d definitely recommend grabbing it! 1y

IndoorDame @AllDebooks I read the original Christmas carol for the first time last year and suddenly all these little cultural pieces fell into place ☺️ 1y

#twofortuesday @TheSpineView Thanks for the tag, @DarkMina 💛. 1) The Nutcracker is my personal favorite! 2) it‘s cliche but Santa is my favorite. He was one of my imaginary best friends growing up 😅. I don‘t really know who to tag so if you would like to be included please let me know in the comments.

DarkMina You‘re welcome! ❤️ 3y
