As a little girl, Fatima Mernissi was often puzzled by the idea of the harem. Even if you accepted that men and women needed to be kept apart, she asked, why couldn't it be the woman who walked freely in the streets, while men stayed locked behind the harem gates? In this story, she tells of her childhood in a Fez harem in the 1940s, a period of social transition in Morocco.

I loved this. Beautifully, meditatively written, it is "tales of a Moroccan girlhood" but very strictly centered around the themes of harem, womanhood, happiness, freedom, beauty... A wonderful read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I actually wanted to read some of her Muslim feminist writings, but this was all I could request through my library. Enjoying it immensely so far, though! We took the kids to the movies this morning, my youngest is passed out and I'm also exhausted and relaxing a bit.
