Think Little
Think Little: Essays | Wendell Berry
1 post | 2 read
First published in A Continuous Harmony in 1972, "Think Little" is cultural critic and agrarian Wendell Berry at his best: prescient about the dire environmental consequences of our mentality of greed and exploitation, yet hopeful that we will recognize war and oppression and pollution not as separate issues, but aspects of the same. For the first in our Counterpoints series we have gathered it together with one of Mr. Berry's most popular and personal essays, "A Native Hill." This gentle essay of recollection is told alongside a poetic lesson in geography, as he explains at length and in detail, that "what [he] stands for is what he stands on." Many of us can identify with him as he suggests, "Sometimes I can no longer think in the house or in the garden or in cleared fields. They bear too much resemblance to our failed human history—failed, because it has led to this human present that is such a bitterness and a trial. And so I go to the woods." "A better possibility is that the movement to preserve the environment will be seen to be, as I think it has to be, not a digression from the civil rights and peace movements, but the logical culmination of those movements. For I believe that the separation of these three problems is artificial. They have the same cause, and that is the mentality of greed and exploitation. The mentality that exploits and destroys the natural environment is the same that abuses racial and economic minorities." —From "Think Little" Each palm-size book in the Counterpoints series is meant to stay with you, whether safely in your pocket or long after you turn the last page. From short stories to essays to poems, these little books celebrate our most-beloved writers, whose work encapsulates the spirit of Counterpoint Press: cutting-edge, wide-ranging, and independent.

Think Little: Essays | Wendell Berry

This is a small book with 2 essays that I got signed. Always have to get something from Mr. Berry when I see him at the book fair. I‘ve actually read one essay but will re-visit it after going to see the Mister Rogers movie today. As usual, when I read Berry‘s essays, I get so frustrated because he was writing these in late 60‘s & 70‘s but the problems are still the same, only worse. Why don‘t we listen?!! I‘ll post quotes later.

Scochrane26 If you want to check out more than this essay, it says it‘s in his book 4y
ljuliel Can you snap a photo of his signature ? I‘ll never get to see him in person, so I‘ll get to pretend by seeing yours ! 😊 4y
Scochrane26 @ljuliel yes, I‘ll take a pic. I have several signed. He is in his 80‘s, so I feel like every year might be the last I get to see him. 4y

ljuliel Yea, I knew he was elderly. I‘ve never looked to see his exact age before. I like his face. It tells an interesting tale, just like his stories do ! Ever notice that about some people ? Their face tells a story. 4y
Scochrane26 @ljuliel Yes, I agree. Have you seen the movie about him? Look & See. It may be hard to find, but I know it‘s on dvd & maybe iTunes. He had them change it from The Seer. 4y
ljuliel No, I haven‘t found that yet. Will look around online. I watch little to no tv. I did find a podcast all about him. Called The Membership , with a picture of those beautiful blue hills he talks about. I haven‘t taken time to listen to it yet. https://rabbitroom.com/2018/12/introducing-the-membership-a-wendell-berry-podcas.... @Scochrane26 4y
Scochrane26 @ljuliel I didn‘t know about that, will have to look it up. Silas House (also ky author) has a podcast & he read an essay about him on one ep. On the Porch 4y
Scochrane26 @ljuliel And of course, Nick Offerman wrote a chapter about him in Gumption. I‘ll make a post since I can‘t put a pic in comments. (edited) 4y
ljuliel Thanks. I‘ll look for it. . I hear great things about Silas House also. 4y
Scochrane26 @ljuliel I hadn‘t read any Silas House books until a few yrs ago, then felt like I was stalking him because I saw him 3 times in about six months. He did a lot of promotion for Southernmost, & he does many local events for various organizations. Plus, I think he still teaches at a college in the area. I follow him on insta. He went to a lot of cities for Southernmost & said he will call in if a book club is reading it. 4y
ljuliel I haven‘t read any of Houses‘ books , but that‘d be neat if he came walking into a book group ! Maybe I‘ll get to him one of these days. I don‘t have a tbr. I have a One of These Days list. 4y
