It‘s 1957, and Isabel and her family leave Mexico for the United States. Isabel tells her story of the first few months in her new home by writing letters to her Aunt Lupita. The epistolary formula for a picture book is interesting, but this is definitely a good #PictureBook for older kids, as it shows bravery, acceptance, changes, and the value of family and friends. The Quiet Place by Sarah Stewart and illustrated by David Small was a beautiful HF read. The story is about a Mexican girl that moves to the US and practices her English by sending her aunt letters. I connected to the text because I learned how to read and write English by writing letter, similar to how the main character did. It‘s overall a book your ESOL students will love and most likely relate to, all while being the perfect book for PR.

The UDL Guideline that I found goes well with the story is developing self-assessment and reflection (9.3). While the ESOL Strategy would be de-emphasizing speed and emphasizing accuracy of work (34). 4y
