Blood Sugar | Daniel Kraus
6 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
From the dark imagination of New York Times bestselling novelist Daniel Kraus - co-author with Guillermo del Toro of THE SHAPE OF WATER (which as a film won the Academy Award for Best Picture) - comes a Halloween crime story that's like nothing you've ever read before. In a ruined house at the end of Yellow Street, an angry outcast hatches a scheme to take revenge for all the wrongs he has suffered. With the help of three alienated kids, he plans to hide razor blades, poison, and broken glass in Halloween candy, maiming or killing dozens of innocent children. But as the clock ticks closer to sundown, will one of his helpers - an innocent himself, in his own streetwise way - carry out or defeat the plan? Told from the child's point of view, in a voice as unforgettable as A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, Kraus' novel is at once frightening and emotional, thought-provoking and laugh-out-loud funny. It'll make you rethink your concepts of family, loyalty, and justice - and will leave you double-checking the wrappers on your Halloween candy for the rest of your days.

Pickpick

Holy hell.

This is a pick with a huge red flag on it - you have to fight through the voice. I started this book and I -hated- the narrator's voice, but I kept reading and the voice didn't stop being it's aggressive self, I just... gave it room. I let this character be and accepted his voice. Once you get past that it's just a short novel Full To The Brim with things that are disgusting, depressing, or both. It worked somehow! I have No Idea how!

I have like 10 pages of this book left and I am TERRIFIED. I can't remember the last time I was this anxious about a book's ending.

I am finding the main narrator's voice horribly grating, but I'm still reading because it turns out I'm very worried about these children.

Yeah, I think late January is about right to read this literal Halloween novel.

This was such a bizarre book. Definitely not for everyone. The horror of it was less the plan to poison kids with candy and more the terrible sadness of the characters' lives. Every bit of back story that was revealed was haunting. The voice used for the POV of the young kid took a while to get into the groove of. I think the best bit was the twist/reveal at the very end. I'm still thinking about this a week later, so I guess that says a lot. ⭐⭐/5

Bailedbailed

Bailed at page 80. What a stupid book. Nothing happened in 80 pages. Told mostly from the POV of a child. Written in a “street” dialect. It‘s a confusing mess with no likable characters. I am angry at myself for wasting an evening reading this crap.

I received my copy from the NightWorms subscription box. If this is an example of their content, I don‘t want to subscribe anymore.
