Goddesses, Whores, Wives And Slaves
Goddesses, Whores, Wives And Slaves: Women in Classical Antiquity | Sarah B Pomeroy
10 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
What did women do in ancient Greece and Rome? Did Socrates' wife Xanthippe ever hear his dialogues on beauty and truth? How many many women actually read the histories of Herodotus and Thucydides? When pagan goddesses were as powerful as gods, why was the status of women generally so low? Why, in traditional histories, is half the population effectively invisible? This unique and important book spans a period of 1500 years - from the fall of Troy to the death of Constantine. It examines all the available evidence - literary and archaeological - and reconstructs the lives of women from all classes of society.

This book is amazing. It was revolutionary when published and it still speaks volumes about the lack of evidence and study materials when it comes to women and gender studies in Classics.

I stitched a bookmark because you can never have too many. I've had a few days off from reading but let's get back to studying.

I'm enjoying this book, even if it's outdated, hetero normative, and generally a bit weak with its arguments. I think it created a brilliant foundation for other books and studies to be based on

This is such a good read so far. I'm not convinced by all of the arguments, but I am enjoying it

Emilymdxn I‘ve heard good things about this one I‘ve been really wanting to read it! 6y
EllanaRose @Emilymdxn - I'd recommend it, and I'm not even that far into it. It is dated though, but it paved the way for other books and studies 6y
Emilymdxn I read quite a lot of v dated criticism for my degree (medieval studies doesn‘t move very fast...) and I quite like the style even when the books are out of date (edited) 6y
EllanaRose @Emilymdxn - Classics is the same. It's worth a read for sure 6y

This was a little more academic than I was hoping for, but still pretty interesting. I've always loved learning about antiquity and how people lived their day to day lives, especially the people that history tends to ignore. A bit of a slog at times but informative and important 3/5 ⭐️

Everything is garbage and my whole county is on fire and the apartment I'm supposed to move into in two weeks is just a few miles from an evacuation zone and the men's soccer team blew it and I am too lazy and depressed to take a nice book pic this time because EVERYTHING IS GARBAGE 😣😣😣 #nowreading

angrylilasian I'm so sorry. Everything is garbage! I hope you and everyone you love are safe. And that you can find time to read and escape for a while. ❤️ 7y
