We Have Been Harmonised
We Have Been Harmonised: Life in China's Surveillance State | Kai Strittmatter
15 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
In China's shiny new 'Smart Cities', citizens can scarcely cross the road or buy an orange without the government knowing about it, and tweeting satirically about the Glorious Leader's dumpling-like features can land you in jail. It's often assumed that capitalism and the internet automatically bring freedom and democracy. But Strittmatter shows how China's autocratic leaders are using powerful new technologies to create the largest and most effective surveillance state the world has ever seen

Every year, the World Values Survey conducts research to determine the proportion of citizens in individual states in favor of a strong leader 'who does not have to bother with parliament or elections.' Between 1990 and 2014, the figure nearly doubled in some countries; in 2014, it was just over twenty percent in Germany, and in Spain, it was forty percent.

Chinese government puts out their own rap to try and reach young people.
Sample: "Let us look to the central committee for comprehensively deepening reforms"
Laughing, thinking maybe these could be translated and covered by western artists (pictured, the fabulous Missy Elliott who always strikes me as having a brilliant sense of humour)
