Where Are You From?

This resonant picture book tells the story of one girl who constantly gets asked a simple question that doesn’t have a simple answer. A great conversation starter in the home or classroom—a book to share, in the spirit of I Am Enough by Grace Byers and Keturah A. Bobo. When a girl is asked where she’s from—where she’s really from—none of her answers seems to be the right one. Unsure about how to reply, she turns to her loving abuelo for help. He doesn’t give her the response she expects. She gets an even better one. Where am I from? You’re from hurricanes and dark storms, and a tiny singing frog that calls the island people home when the sun goes to sleep.... With themes of self-acceptance, identity, and home, this powerful, lyrical picture book will resonate with readers young and old, from all backgrounds and of all colors—especially anyone who ever felt that they don’t belong.

It‘s rare that I completely fall in love with a picture book when I don‘t find the art exceptional, but this book tackles an issue I feel really strongly about & does an exceptional job. At least in America, “where are you from?†is a coded question that an overwhelming number of children (and adults) from many backgrounds get asked all the time. It can be devastating to one‘s sense of identity, & can put you in potentially volatile situations👇ðŸ¼

IndoorDame when you don‘t know how to answer. Giving children tools to approach these situations with confidence early in life, and giving caretakers the tools to successfully navigate a conversation about this is key. #BBRC Picture Book Letter W #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers @LibrarianRyan @StayCurious 2y

This is such a cute book to incorporate in the classroom, this book can be used for a multi culture day. I think it is important for students to know about their classmates and where they come from.

Yes to this book! Much needed for first generation Americans whose parents are Latin American. âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸
