How To Lose A Referendum
How To Lose A Referendum: The Definitive Story of Why The UK Voted for Brexit | Jason Farrell, Paul Goldsmith
5 posts | 1 read
Did David Cameron have to call a referendum? Did history put a gun to his head? And was Britain's departure from the EU destined from the moment he called it? Was it a lost cause, or did the Prime Minister lose it? Sky News senior political correspondent Jason Farrell teams up with political blogger and economics and politics teacher Paul Goldsmith to provide the definitive story of one of the biggest shocks in British political history. Probing into the social fabric of the UK, the psyche of the electorate, and seventy years of European history, Farrell and Goldsmith identify eighteen key reasons why the UK made its choice, from Britain's absence at the birth of the European project to the inflammatory rhetoric of one Nigel Farage, and everything in between. How to Lose a Referendum is the product of extensive and refreshingly frank interviews with the key players from both campaigns coupled with a wide-ranging exploration of the historical context around Britain's departure. Why was a project designed for common peace and prosperity ultimately so hard to defend? Whether you're a Leaver or a Remainer, a newcomer to the debate or a battle-hardened politico, this nuanced and thoughtful analysis will change the way you look at Britain's vote for Brexit.

This book got me thinking about where I am on the political spectrum in more detail than just ‘lefty‘ so I found this tool online to find out.

I‘m more than happy to be in the same section as Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn.

Link to the tool is here if anyone wants to try: https://www.politicalcompass.org/test

“The legal system of England, Northern Ireland and Wales is based on common law, while the EU‘s legal system is based on civil law. What this means in practice is that in Britain, a citizen can do whatever they want unless it is expressly forbidden, but in Europe, a citizen can only do something if the law expressly permits it.”

This makes a lot of sense. I‘m glad that I powered through this one - it‘s made many things clearer. 🇬🇧😢🤯

Connster Picture is Banksy‘s mural in Dover. I found it in this article https://www.designboom.com/art/banksy-dover-eu-mural-brexit-england-05-08-2017/ I‘d never noticed the cracks emanating from the metalworker‘s chipping before! 5y

This sounds about right! Brexit‘s contributing factors are like curving lines of dominoes, spiralling around and into each other to topple what we thought the U.K. was made of. So many things, over 30+ years, combined and contributed to the situation we find ourselves in. I just can‘t see a solution that will right this dreadful mess.

Books on Kindle don‘t photograph quite as well as hard copies, so here‘s a picture of Alan helping me to finish the tagged book.

This one is quite an interesting read so far. It goes into the history of the EU and Britain‘s role in it in great depth, which is both helpful and tedious in equal measure; I was expecting more about how both sides campaigned for the 2016 referendum. I‘m ploughing on though as I‘m learning a great deal. #catsoflitsy

The whole Brexit thing makes me mad. People did not know what they were voting for. The entire campaign was built on lies. It‘s enabled hateful attitudes to rise to the surface. It‘s allowed the rise of the Alt-Right. We now have a complete clown as PM. The U.K. is divided. It‘s not a nice place to be.
